2006: Yucca Telecom officials were starting an $11.3 million fiber optic project in Portales.
The company’s mission: “... Provide the fastest Internet,” said Yucca General Manager Scott Arnold.
1966: A set of “Beauty Ring” hubcaps had been stolen from a Clovis man whose car was parked at the high school during a basketball game.
Don Stagner, who lived at 2220 Axtell, said the hubcaps were valued at $12.50.
1946: Directors of Clovis’ Chamber of Commerce had met to discuss urgent problems facing the city.
Problems included overcrowded conditions at public schools and the municipal hospital, inadequate salaries for teachers, unsanitary conditions in the community, the need for a municipal airport, an undermanned police force and “the basic problem of inadequate city revenue which is the reason for most of the city’s troubles,” the Clovis News-Journal reported.
1941: Three local men were being held in police custody in connection with an assassination plot aimed at residents who lived 13 miles south of Clovis.
Two of those arrested — Clarence Ingram and Charlie Wilson of Tucumcari — said they were promised payment by a third man, Richard Mitzelfelt, who was also arrested, if they killed any of the three adults living in the house.
Mitzelfelt, of Clovis, particularly wanted his estranged wife killed, the other suspects said.
None of the adults were injured in the shooting that followed, but an 11-year-old girl was “seriously wounded,” the Clovis News-Journal reported.
All three men went to prison in connection with the incident.
