CHS girls weekend basketball capsule

Clovis at Cibola, Sandia

When: 7 p.m. today at Cibola, 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Sandia

Records: Clovis 3-5, Cibola 6-0, Sandia 2-3.

Last meetings: The Lady Wildcats hosted both teams in a back-to-back last December at The Rock, beating Cibola 51-45 and routing Sandia 81-31.

Last time out: The Lady Cats lost to Mayfield 55-33 in Saturday’s fifth-place game of the Mel Otero Invite at Rio Rancho. Cibola was to have played Manzano on Saturday, but no result was availble. On Dec. 10, the Cougars thumped Sandia 81-50 at home in the previous game for both squads.

Of note: Cibola went on to beat La Cueva 58-46 in last year’s Class 6A state championship game, one day after the Bears handed CHS a 52-31 loss in the semifinals. … Lady Cats coach Jeff Reed said he scouted both teams in last week’s game, noting that Cibola is “loaded” with almost everyone back from last season while the Matadors are much-improved. “It’ll be a good game for us,” he said of Saturday’s tilt. “It’s one of those games you look at before the season and think we could win, but they weren’t that bad.” … Sophomore G Amaya Brown, junior guard Kavionnia Brown ( apparently no relation) and junior F Corbyn Cunningham are Cibola’s top players, Reed said, while junior P Cara Liggins keys Sandia. Kavonnia Brown played as a freshman two years ago at Volcano Vista on a team which beat CHS in the state semifinals before transferring to Cibola.
