On this date …

1965: Shaw’s, at Fourth and Main in Clovis, was open every night until 8 and promised “guaranteed lowest prices on fine diamonds.”

The story offered a diamond heart pendant for $119, a 30-jeweled Bulova watch for $69.95 (or $1.50 per week) and an “unusual diamond fancy ring” for $100.

1940: There was bad news for birds.

“Thousands of birds which nightly roost in the huge trees on the Harvey House grounds may find their habitat greatly changed tonight when they fly in from the surrounding regions for their rendezvous,” The Clovis News-Journal reported.

“Tree pruners are at work on the trees and are removing huge branches which, heretofore, have provided shelter for the birds.”
