Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities

Notebook — Nov. 29

The United Way of Eastern New Mexico wants you.

Here’s the plan:

“We will be creating a stimulating learning experience allowing our young people to step into the world of adult responsibility and decision making, dealing with the financial stresses of making ends meet and handling the challenges when what we have just isn't enough,” said Director Erinn Burch in a news release.

The organization is looking for 40 to 50 volunteers to spend Dec. 7 making that happen.

“Your day will be spent ‘role playing’,” Burch wrote, as landlords, bank employees, student-loan representatives, doctors, social workers and more.

Students from Clovis’ Freshman Academy will be visiting the role players to accomplish their task “of making their paycheck go the distance,” Burch wrote.

They’re calling the experience “Reality Check Day.”

Anyone interested can contact United Way at 211 or 575-769-2103.

The agency is planning more Reality Check Days in January and February so it can help 600 students prepare for their lives ahead.
