Eastern New Mexico junior Lauren Frye, twice a Lone Star Conference second-team selection, got the callup to the first team Wednesday night.
Frye, the LSC’s freshman of the year in 2013, was the Greyhounds’ lone first-team LSC selection this year, announced Wednesday night at the LSC volleyball awards banquet in Stephenville, Texas. The banquet is the ceremonial beginning to the annual LSC tournament, which starts today at Tarleton State University.
Frye, a 6-foot outside hitter, led the Greyhounds (13-19, 4-12 LSC) with 481 kills — second only to offensive player of the year Hailey Roberts of regular season champion and tournament host Tarleton State.
The TexAnns, who went 15-1 in the conference and face ENMU in a 6:30 p.m. tournament quarterfinal, received two first-team selections, Roberts, and had Mary Schnidler honored as the conference’s coach of the year.
Second-seeded Angelo State had three first-teamers, including libero of the year and academic player of the year Katie MacLeay.
Texas Woman’s had two first-team selections, with junior Sara Oxford winning newcomer of the year and defensive player of the year.
Seven of the conference’s nine teams received at least one first-team selection. Sixth-seed Texas A&M-Commerce and Midwestern State — 0-16 in th eLSC — had no first-team selections.
Eastern New Mexico sophomore libero Andrea Aguilar — third in the conference with 510 digs — received an honorable mention, while junior Courtney Lawson received a spot on the all-academic team.
It is the second-straight year the Greyhounds have received at least one first-team selection. Middle blocker Agatha Gibbons was named to the first team in 2014.
