ALBUQUERQUE — Both of Clovis High’s soccer teams battled through rainy conditions and took their opponents deep into their first-round Class 6A state mates on Friday, only to come up short.
The CHS boys, seeded 11th, lost to sixth-seeded Sandia 1-0 while the girls, seeded 10th, were beaten by seventh-seeded Volcano Vista 2-0. Both matches were played in some rain.
Both winners advance to quarterfinal round play on Thursday at the APS soccer complex in Albuquerque.
Sandia (11-6-2) scored in the 57th minute when junior midfielder Shamach Broussard. Cats coach Greg Trujillo said he got in position after receiving a through ball and slipping it past CHS goalkeeper Orion Garcia.
“We got caught a little too high and they put it away,” Trujillo said. “We just had a little lapse of concentration, and it was enough for him to put it in.”
The Cats (15-6) nearly tied it in the final five minutes, but Sandia’s goalkeeper turned away senior Sergio Soto’s shot, tipping it away from the right corner of the net.
“Somehow, the goalkeeper was able to knock it out,” Trujillo said. “He made a great save.
“The boys played hard. They left it all on the field, and that’s all you could ask for.”
The Matadors face third-seeded Albuquerque High in the quarterfinal round.
Meantime, the Lady Wildcats (13-5-3) were locked in a scoreless duel for nearly 70 minutes before the Hawks (13-5-1) were able to score twice in a span of about three minutes.
“I think we competed well,” Lady Cats coach Traci Sievers said. “We played hard. They (Hawks) were very aggressive up top.”
Volcano Vista peppered Lady Cats junior goalkeeper Hailey Brady with 17 shots on goal, and she finished with 15 saves. “Hailey had a lot of good saves,” Sievers said.
Freshman goalkeeper Caitlyn Zang earned the shutout for Volcano Vista, making three saves. The Hawks’ next outing is against second-seeded Eldorado in the quarterfinals.
