Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities

Notebook — Oct. 28

The business of treating: About 45 downtown Portales businesses are participating in the annual Safe Trick-or-Treat event on Friday.

It’s from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.

“The event offers a safe and convenient alternative to traditional trick-or-treat and gives our local businesses an opportunity to give something back to the community in a fun way,” said Portales Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Karl Terry in a news release.

“The kids get candy and a chance to dress up and the parents escorting them get a chance to meet the local business people in their community.”

More information: Call the Chamber at 575-356-8541 or Portales MainStreet at 575-226-3783.

Donuts for charity: There is no evidence that donuts purchased for a good cause have fewer calories, but some might suggest you will feel less guilty eating them.

Clovis police officers will be at the intersections of Llano Estacado / Prince and at Paradise Market, 601 E. Llano Estacado, from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. on Friday, trading donuts for donations.

The fundraising is for the Clovis Police Department’s “Cops and Kids Christmas,” formerly known as “Shop with a Cop,” according to a police news release.

Checks can be made payable to Fraternal Order of Police.

A dozen donuts seems a fair trade for a $20 donation, don’t you think?
