CHS teams set to travel for state soccer

Clovis High’s girls have been seeded 10th and the boys 11th for Class 6A state soccer competition, and thus both will travel for opening-round matches in the 12-team tournaments.

The Lady Wildcats (13-4-3) visit 10th-seeded Volcano Vista (12-5-1) in a 5 p.m. start while the Wildcats (15-5) play at No. 6 Sandia (10-6-2) in a 6 p.m. clash, both on Friday.

Volcano Vista has already beaten the top two seeds in the tournament with a 4-1 win over No. 1 La Cueva and a split with Eldorado. In District 1-6A, the Hawks were fourth out of five teams, losing a pair of 1-0 decisions to fifth-seeded Cibola and splitting against both No. 4 Rio Rancho and No. 6 Rio Rancho Cleveland.

They come into Friday’s match with a four-game winning streak.

Meantime, Sandia’s boys (10-6-2) finished 5-3 and third in District 6-2A, behind top-seeded La Cueva and eighth-seeded Eldorado. The Matadors lost twice to La Cueva, including once in double overtime, and split their matches with Eldorado.

The top four seeds have byes into next week’s quarterfinals, which are slated for Thursday. Semifinals will follow on Friday and championship matches on Saturday, all at the APS Soccer Complex in Albuquerque.
