DORA — The District 6-2A volleyball contest between Dora and Melrose was supposed to be a match honoring all those who have been affected by breast cancer. Unfortunately for the Lady Coyotes, things took a turn for the worse when Dora’s Daelynn Lee had to leave the arena on a stretcher.
Following Melrose’s 25-11, 25-9, 25-12 win, both teams met in the middle of the arena and formed a prayer circle for Lee’s well-being.

Players and coaches from both Dora and Melrose form a prayer circle for Dora’s Daelynn Lee following the Lady Buffs win. Lee was injured during the second set and was unable to leave under her own power.
Though the Lady Buffs (14-2, 3-0) won the match in straight sets, the entire mood of the arena suddenly changed in late in the second set as Lee dove for a ball and hit her head on the floor. She tried to get up, but couldn’t.
The arena went silent as coach Arnold Peralez and the medical staff attended to Lee. Unable to get up on her own power, she was put onto a portable gurney and taken to a hospital.
“It was probably a severe concussion,” Peralez said. “She was nauseous, she was dizzy but she was conscious the whole time.”
Peralez said he spoke to Lee’s family and will be in constant contact with them as he learns more about Lee’s diagnosis.
“She’s a vital part of our team and the community as well,” Peralez said. “She’ll be missed. We hope it’s a quick recovery.”
Dora (3-13, 0-2) continues in district play on Saturday with a 6 p.m. matchup at Fort Sumner (7-9, 0-2).
