Melissa Carnero had a goal and an assist on Tuesday as the Eastern New Mexico University women’s soccer team blanked Texas-Permian Basin 3-0 at the ENMU pitch.

The Greyhounds (4-8-1), donning pink jerseys in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, dominated the Falcons (2-9-1). They put heavy pressure on UTPB goalkeeper Ebony Campbell with 11 shots on goal, while ENMU keeper Cristina Escobedo only had to make two saves to earn her first win of the season.

Carnero drew first blood with her third goal of the season, coming in the 35th minute on an assist from Baylee Hampton.

ENMU’s Melissa Carnero dribbles the ball on a breakaway attempt. Carnero would score one goal for the Greyhounds in their 3-0 victory.

“Baylee gave me a perfect look,” Carnero said. “I wasn’t expecting it but it was right where I needed it.”

Carnero played a part in the second goal as she assisted senior Carolyn Armijo in the 49th minute. Unfortunately for Armijo, she was given a red card in the 62nd minute for talking back to the referee, and she’ll miss Friday’s 3 p.m. home match against Lone Star Conference rival Angelo State.

ENMU had to play a man down for about 13 minutes until UTPB’s Karla Hernandez was given her second yellow card of the game, making it 10-on-10 for the rest of the game.

The Hounds weren’t done yet as Tori Hendrickson scored in the 61st minute off a throw-in from Jenna Sievers.

“Jenna did a great job of finding me on the throw in,” Hendrickson said.

ENMU coach Omar Morales was happy with the win, which ended a four-match losing skid for the Greyhounds.

“It was a great overall game,” Morales said. “I thought we could have scored a few more goals, but I’ll take it.”
