ENMU women edged by No. 6 Rambelles; men fall to Newman

Staff report

SAN ANGELO, Texas — Angelo State had a huge advantage in overall shots, but it took the sixth-ranked Rambelles more than 80 minutes to break through in a 1-0 Lone Star Conference women’s soccer victory over Eastern New Mexico on Sunday.

Senior forward-midfielder Sierra Anderson broke the ice in the 83rd minute, scoring her seventh goal of the season off a crossing pass from sophomore forward Tiffany Dang and beating ENMU keeper Karissa Stinson to the right corner of the net from about 15 yards out.

The Rambelles (9-1-1, 3-1-0 LSC) pumped out 23 shots in the match to just one for ENMU, but had only a 4-1 margin in shots on goal as the Greyhounds (3-6-1, 0-3-0) played a solid defensive game.

The Hounds’ next outing will be in a 3 p.m. conference match on Friday against Texas A&M-Commerce at the ENMU pitch.

Men — At Wichita, Kansas, the ENMU men fell behind 3-0 and dropped a 3-1 decision to Newman University.

The Greyhounds (3-4-2) had slight advantages in shots (14-12) and shots on goal (8-7), but couldn’t find the net often enough in seeing their losing streak reach four since a 3-0-2 start.

Senior midfielder Victor Rojas put the Jets (5-4-1) ahead in the 17th minute, bending a corner kick into the next. Junior forward Luca Anelli and senior midfielder Pedro Agusto added goals for a 3-0 lead before ENMU senior midfielder Roberto Zatarain put in his own rebound in the 40th minute of the half.

Sophomore Calum Dillon had six saves in goal for Newman, while sophomore goalkeeper James Gutierrez made five stops for ENMU.

The Hounds’ next outing will be in an 11 a.m. start on Sunday against second-ranked Midwestern State at the ENMU pitch.
