No. 9 Set. Ed's routs Hounds 8-0

Staff report

AUSTIN, Texas — The St. Edward’s men’s soccer team is on a serious early-season roll, as Eastern New Mexico University found out on Sunday.

The Hilltoppers, ranked ninth in NCAA Division II, broke a scoreless tie with four goals in a 10-minute span late in the half and went on to rout the Greyhounds 8-0.

ENMU (3-2-2), which suffered its first loss of the season 3-1 on Friday night at San Antonio, was dominated in the match statistically. Still, the Hounds kept it scoreless until sophomore midfielder Pablo Covarrubias converted the first of his two goals for SEU after he intercepted a clearing pass by ENMU goalkeeper James Gutierrez in the 35th minute.

Before the half was out, it was 4-0 and the Hounds were unable to mount any kind of comeback.

Covarrubias added an assist for the Hilltoppers (5-0-2), while junior forward Jack Blanton also had two goals. St. Ed’s has outscored its opponents 25-1 for the season, including 22-0 in the last three matches.

ENMU failed to register a shot on goal in the contest, and St. Ed’s had a 9-1 margin in corner kicks. Gutierrez made five saves in net.

It was the first time this season the Hounds, who had not given up more than three goals in a match, have been shut out. They are now 1-7-2 all-time against the Hilltoppers.

The Hounds return to action with at 3 p.m. (MDT) clash on Thursday at West Texas A&M.
