Cameo Elementary is in the process of getting a new roof, according to Clovis Municipal Schools Operations Deputy Superintendent Carrie Bunce.
Bunce said two classrooms at Cameo have been sealed off since last winter due to a failure in the roof directly above them. Until school administration could secure funding from the state to fix the roof as a whole, Bunce said, a temporary roof was put on top of them to prevent further damage to the classrooms.
“If we had not (put a temporary roof on), we would still have the major leaks in those classrooms,” Bunce said.
Since then, two classes have been placed in temporary rooms until repairs can be made.
Bunce said the temporary roof cost CMS $8,000, and the new roof and HVAC system is projected to cost $850,000.
Bunce said the school is currently in the design phase for the new roof and HVAC system, and at some point the school will put out a request for proposal.
Bunce did not know when the RFP would be sent out.
“It takes an extremely long time to go through the process (of getting funding through the state),” Bunce said. “With the moisture, it makes it difficult. It’s rained however many days, and some of that makes it difficult to fix. We do try to fix them as quickly as we can.”
Bunce added that roof leaks happen throughout the district thanks to flat top roofs, which are “notorious” for getting leaks.
“Some (roofs) are aged, but as soon as a leak is reported, it is usually fixed,” Bunce said. “As soon s it’s dry, roof leaks are repaired.”
