Another game, another victory for the Portales Rams as they ruined Dexter’s homecoming game in a 56-6 blowout.
For the first time in three games Portales (5-0) was scored upon, but the lone Dexter (3-2) score took place when the game was already out of reach.
“We played outstanding,” Portales coach Jaime Ramirez said. “Offense, defense, special teams. They all did a great job.”
Just as the pattern has been throughout the season, Bronte Staugaard and Junior Ramirez put up big numbers in the victory. Ramirez finished with five total touchdowns and Staugaard had three of his own
But they weren’t the only Rams who put points on the board.
Staugaard started off the scoring for the Rams in the first quarter with a rushing touchdown. Quarterback Junior Ramirez threw his first touchdown pass to Jake Weringa and then called his own number to put the Rams up 21-0 at the end of the first quarter.
Ramirez threw his second touchdown of the game to Darion Ontiveros to put Portales up 27-0 after their extra point was blocked. Ramirez called his own number again and after Staugaard ran in the two-point conversion, the Rams were up 35-0.
Dexter would get on the scoreboard late in the second quarter when Gabino Rodriguez scored a rushing touchdown. Dexter went for a two-point run but the Rams defense stopped it.
Ramirez threw his third and final touchdown of the game to Staugaard in the third quarter to put the Rams up 42-6 and start the running clock.
Staugaard scored again in the fourth, and Jordan Davis’ touchdown with 15 seconds remaining ended the game on the 50-point rule. It is the second time in school history the Rams have ended the game via the five-year-old rule, with the first a 54-0 win over West Las Vegas in 2011.
Next week Portales returns to Blackwater Draw for their homecoming game against the Pojoaque Valley Elks.
