LAS VEGAS, N.M. — Eastern New Mexico University’s volleyball team got its final tuneup before the start of Lone Star Conference play this weekend, slipped above the .500 mark at 5-4 with a 25-21, 25-18, 25-23 victory over New Mexico Highlands on Tuesday night.
Junior outside hitter Lauren Frye recorded 14 kills for the Greyhounds, who host Texas Woman’s in the LSC opener at 6 p.m. on Friday at Greyhound Arena.
“Winning on the road is always hard, and it’s a plus to get a win, especially against our in-state rivals,” ENMU coach Sia Poyer told the school’s website. “(It’s a nice little confidence-booster heading into conference play.”
The Hounds had a 20-7 advantage over the Cowgirls (2-4) in total blocks, including 2-1 on solos. Poyer said their ability at the net was a key to the win.
“The big thing was blocks and it made a huge difference tonight,” he said. “(And) our younger players were huge tonight.
Freshman) Amanda Diet (seven kills, three block assists) really shined playing outside (on the front row), where she hasn’t played at in years.”
Clovis High grad Amanda Aguilar collected 17 digs in the match for ENMU, while sophomore setter Alexis Aguirre had 17 assists.
Sophomore middle blocker Katie Trammel led Highlands with seven kills.
