Rams looking for 3-0 start

STAFF WRITER[email protected]

At 2-0 the Portales Rams already have victories over fellow Class 4A Robertson and Class 5A Lovington, both times at home. Now it's time for the Rams to go on the road to take on the Class 3A Texico Wolverines (1-1).

Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Texico.

In Portales' first two games, Bronte Staugaard has run the ball 54 times for 427 yards and six touchdowns for an average of 213.5 yards and three touchdowns per contest. Since the Red and White have won both games, there's no reason to change anything up just yet. Just like Portales, Texico also relies havily on the rushing attack. Mason Golden leads the Wolverines with 284 rushing yards and three touchdowns.

The Wolverines may be a run-first team, but they can still throw the ball when needed. Quarterback Lance Myers has thrown for 180 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. Rafael Maldonado and Paden McDermid are his two favorite targets. McDermid leads the team with 95 receiving yards and Maldonado is second on the team with 60.

Last year the Wolverines beat the Rams 42-32 in Portales. It was the only home loss of the season for the Red and White. Texico jumped out to a 24-point lead in the first quarter, forcing the Rams to rely on the passing attack, rather than the running game in a failed comeback attempt.

As such, Bronte Staugaard had an atypical game as he ran the ball just four times for 16 yards but caught six passes for 131 yards and two touchdowns. Staugaard finished with 147 of Portales' 391 total yards.
