Editor's Notebook — Sept. 9

Remembering 9/11: Friday’s Clovis High School football game is being played “in honor of all military men and women from all branches of the military, veterans, police, firefighters, paramedics, nurses (and) doctors.”

That’s the message from Eastern Plains Council of Governments in a news release.

Friday marks the 14th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Organizers are asking fans to “Pack Leon Williams Stadium.”

The Wildcats’ game against Atrisco Heritage begins at 7 p.m.

The first 300 Clovis fans will be given flags to fly during the game and the first 200 Wildcats supporters will receive, “We will never forget” 9/11 T-shirts, the news release said.

Military members will be admitted for $3.

Good to hear: Good news from the New Mexico Department of Health: Suicide attempts among New Mexico high school students has decreased by 35 percent over the past decade, from 14.5 percent in 2003 to 9.4 percent in 2013.

The DOH report “shows that we have made progress, but there is still a lot of work to do,” said Department of Health Secretary Retta Ward, MPH. “It speaks to the success of continuous prevention efforts to reach children and young adults. It also shows more parents, health care professionals, and educators are recognizing youth suicide warning signs, such as depression and substance abuse.”
