It took Clovis High’s girls less than three minutes to score. It took them less than a half to assume firm control.

The Lady Wildcats cruised to a 6-0 lead at the intermission and never let Portales get close to scoring in a 10-0 win on Saturday at Leon Williams Stadium. The game ended in the final minute on the 10-goal lead rule.

CHS coach Traci Sievers said her team attempted to work on things it knows it will need to do well when the meatier part of the schedule comes along, starting on Tuesday at Roswell High.

Clovis senior forward Sam Meza gets by Portales defender Mireya Lopez in the second half for her third of four goals during Saturday’s 10-0 win at Leon Williams Stadium.

“The wind was something we were talking about today,” she said. “We tried to concentrate on keeping our passes on the ground, and just looking to distribute (the ball).

“We know it’ll be a physical game (at Roswell).”

Senior forward Samantha Meza scored four goals for the Lady Cats (3-2-1), including three in a span of about 20 minutes in the first half. Senior forward Arianna Meza added two goals and two assists, eighth-grader Sofia Rico had two goals and an assist and junior defender Jaci Sievers contributed a goal and three assists.

The Lady Cats outshot PHS on goal 20-0. Portales (1-5) was rarely able to advance the ball into Clovis’ end of the field.

“Clovis is a good team,” Lady Rams co-coach Ruben Tellez said. “They passed the ball well, and they work together as a team.

“As for us, we still have fundamentals that we’re trying to learn. We need to work on the smaller things before we get to the bigger things.”

Junior forward Alyssa Loya scored the day’s first goal in the third minute before Samantha Meza went on her run.

“You never know how these games are going to go,” Traci Sievers said. “There were thing we were hoping to be able to work on.”

The teams play again on Oct. 6 in Portales.

“It’ll be a different game on grass,” Traci Sievers said, referring to the Lady Rams’ pitch as opposed to the turf CHS plays on.

PHS returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts Lovington in a 3 p.m. start.
