Editor’s note: The following is one in a series in which we profile religious leaders in Roosevelt County.

Cody Brown has been the pastor at The Porch in Portales since it began more than 18 months ago. He previously pastored at Bethel Baptist Church and Arch Baptist Church. Brown said his favorite part of the position is how God is changing him through the people he has been given to shepherd.

“I am an introvert, but I am slowly coming out of my shell,” he said. “Even though it can be hard for me and my personality, it is amazing to get to build relationships with so many different people. They have amazing stories that I want to hear.”

What are some hobbies and activities you enjoy doing outside of work?

I used to be a coach, so I enjoy sports and the opportunities I get to coach my own kids.

Outside of the church, where is your favorite place to go in Portales?

Eastern New Mexico University, because it brings back great memories of college life. It reminds me of the great friends I had in college, and it is where I met my beautiful wife, Shawna.

If you could be any fictional character from a movie, show or novel, who would it be and why?

Napoleon Dynamite. When I was a kid, I begged for moon boots like that and never got them.

What do you think is a common misconception about Christianity?

That believing in Jesus as Lord and Savior is just about giving him our sins. It’s not. It’s about giving him our entire life. Not just our sins, but all of who we are.

What is a topic or issue in today’s culture that impacts or distresses you the most?

Relationships. My wife and I struggle everyday with how to teach our children to have real relationships with other people. Not a relationship found on an iPod screen or computer, but real life, face-to-face type relationships. The type of relationships that teach you the power of your words, and the type of relationships where you learn to rejoice when others rejoice and mourn with those who mourn.
