Clovis suffers rash of vehicle burglaries

STAFF REPORT

Multiple vehicles were broken into Thursday between 2:30 a.m. and 5:30 a.m. around Lew Wallace Drive, according to Clovis Interim Police Chief Doug Ford.

Ford said all burglaries were “opportunity-type burglaries,” where vehicles were not locked. Burglars pulled door handles to see if they were locked. If not, he said, they were able to steal valuables including iPods and wallets.

“We’ve put several public service announcements out on that,” Ford said. “Please don’t leave your valuables in the car. Put them where (burglars) can’t see them. All these burglaries were where vehicles weren’t secured. They rattled doors, pulled door handles, opened them and got right in to take this stuff.”

Ford said investigators have knocked on doors speaking to residents in the area to see if they witnessed anything suspicious, started looking for security cameras that may be helpful in the ongoing investigation and dusted for fingerprints.

No suspects have been found, Ford said.

“Unfortunately we’re not the town I grew up in,” said Ford, a Clovis native. “It’s a different time frame, a different area. (This crime) is everywhere.”
