Welcome new dawgs ...

A good Saturday to incoming freshman at Eastern New Mexico University. You’re learning a lot at Dawg Days, including many transitions for the university. More than $120 million has been spent on campus renovations over the last 14 years, and another $13 million is coming your way with a new football stadium set to open on campus next year. It’s funded through private donations and student fees increases that were approved two years ago by some of your new classmates.

Your bill: $40 in fees per semester. Admission is, however, free to you for all sports events, including three home games for Greyhound football games.

One fair Saturday ...

There’s plenty to do today at the Curry County Fair, even before the carnival opens and the events center holds an evening dance.

At 9 a.m., kids events begin with the annual turtle race. The 15th annual running takes place in the Kevin Roberts Show Arena. At 2 p.m. in the parking lot, United Way of Eastern New Mexico has its annual Truck Pull charity competition.

When 6 p.m. rolls around, it’s time for an inaugural event. Southwest Cheese is providing blocks of cheese for carvers in the “Cut the Cheese” competition at the indoor pavilion.
