McGee: This isn't goodbye, folks

It's time for me to say so long. The Lady of the House and I have bought a house in “L.A.” As any good Southerner knows “L.A.” doesn't stand for Los Angeles, nope, it stands for “Lower Alabama,” a little part of The Southland that also includes the Florida Panhandle.

I'm not writing this piece as a goodbye note.

I'm writing it to encourage you to follow your dreams.

I've run into so many folks who stay right where they are for various reasons. Some people are completely satisfied with what they're doing. Some wonder what it would be like to do something else, move someplace else, maybe for better opportunity, or better climate, or they have dreams of making it big in Los Angeles, Nashville or New York.

Yet they stay.

Many stay because they're afraid.

What can you say to someone who stays right where they are when they want to go?

Go on, go forth, do it.

I think of a song called “Columbus” by a singer named Mary Black. It makes me think about sailing forth into The Great Unknown of life as Christopher Columbus sailed into the unknown of the eastern ocean. Don't you suppose he had his fears? But he went on.

I'm sailing into the know what awaits me in terms of life, health and career in the 'new country,' but I'll find out and I'll deal with it.

Just like you would if you want a change.

I have moved many times in my life but there have been only two moves when I packed it all up and moved to a town with only a place to land, no job, no acquaintances or anything else.

Each time I started over to be sure, but in the end it all turned out OK.

I believe it will for you too.

If it doesn't work out you can always come home, wherever that is.
