Actors with the Brickstreet Players local theater group played in front of a packed room Tuesday at the Clovis-Carver Public Library.

Chris Cummins and Wayne Davies starred as the Hare and the Tortoise for the kickoff of the library's Summer Reading Program.

“It was a treat,” said Krissie Carter, Youth Services Librarian. “It was just wonderful. I love groups like this, where the kids can see the live action…Hopefully it's inspiring to them, and that's the ultimate goal. Give them a little taste of something they may not experience.”

As Cummins and Davies performed, helpers added and removed props and rotated a set that represented the four seasons for the different stages of the play.

Director Meredith Lazzara said this is the first time in two years the group has performed for children.

“It's almost a tougher audience,” Cummins said. “Because they tend to interact a lot more, whereas adults will just sit and watch.”

The Brickstreet Players came to the Clovis-Carver Public Library Tuesday morning to perform during Kids Story Hour. The group performed the story of the Tortoise and The Hare, with Wayne Davies, left, as the tortoise and Chris Cummins as the hare.

Children in the audience helped Cummins spot the tortoise slowly passing him, were vocal about their love of carrots, and offered backup when he asked repeatedly “When will tortoise race?”

Lazzara said the great turnout validates the fact that there is a need in the community for plays for children.

“I'm a mom and my husband is active duty, and I just really felt strongly about having something for children,” Lazzara said. “I know so many moms on base and in the community would really like something for children to do.”

Lazzara said the group is looking to find other venues to perform, and they are hoping to form a partnership with the library next year for the Summer Reading Series.

The Brickstreet Players will be back at the library for another showing of The Hare and Tortoise at 1 p.m. Saturday.
