Military politics...

• U.S. Sen. Martin Heinrich voted Thursday to advance a funding bill out of committee to the full Senate that includes money for six key things at Cannon Air Force Base.

The money breakdown — $7,8 million for a new entry control gatehouse; $20.4 million for new pump house and fuel storage; $11.65 million for a new operations and training center for trainers; $13.14 million for a new building to train special operations forces; $480 million for remotely piloted aircraft missions at Canon and Holloman AFB.

There's also provision requiring the secretary of defense to submit a comprehensive five-year plan for the Melrose Bombing Range.

Holiday reminder...

• It should go without saying. Monday is Memorial Day, a local, state and federal holiday. No government offices are open. It's a day to remember our service men and women. There's a special commemoration ceremony 10 a.m. Monday at Lawn Haven Cemetery in Clovis.

Observations...

• The Miller moths are back. The swallows you see diving in and out overhead at intersections and the western king birds stopping in mid-air are trying their best to grab a few of the giant morsels for dinner. Take a few minutes to enjoy the acrobatics.

Favorite lyrics...
