Utah woman gets life for baby killings
PROVO, Utah — A Utah woman who pleaded guilty to killing six of her newborns and hiding their bodies in her garage has been sentenced to up to life in prison.
A judge handed down the maximum sentence Monday to 40-year-old Megan Huntsman.
The Pleasant Grove woman told police she was too addicted to meth to care for more children.
The sentence brings closure to a case that sent shockwaves through the quiet, mostly Mormon community where Huntsman stored the tiny bodies for more than a decade.
SW Airlines target of lawsuit
SAN FRANCISCO — A woman filed a wrongful-death lawsuit Monday against Southwest Airlines, claiming crew members mistook her husband’s medical emergency for unruly behavior aboard a California flight and didn’t assist him.
Richard Ilczyszyn, 46, was found unconscious after the flight from Oakland to Orange County landed last year, and he died the next day at a hospital, according to the lawsuit filed in Alameda County Superior Court by his wife,
Kelly Ilczyszyn, herself a Southwest Airlines flight attendant. He had suffered a blood clot.
Southwest Airlines said in a statement that it was saddened to learn of the death, but its flight attendants handled the incident “appropriately and professionally.”
Inmates accused in phone scam
PITTSBURGH — Two former Georgia state prison inmates have been jailed there on charges they phoned western Pennsylvania residents and scammed six into wiring $990 each, supposedly to pay fines for missing jury duty.
The Allegheny County sheriff’s office in Pittsburgh said it expects more victims to emerge as it continues investigating suspects Antonio Jones and Taurus Thurmond.
Hundreds gather for memorial
GARDEN GROVE, Calif. — Hundreds of people gathered Monday at a memorial service for televangelist Rev. Robert H. Schuller outside the glimmering cathedral he built in Southern California.
Schuller died on April 2 after a battle with esophageal cancer. He was 88.
The memorial was held on a plaza at what was formerly Schuller’s Crystal Cathedral in the heart of Orange County and is now a Roman Catholic cathedral.
