Your style tells your story

Nieka Style

A colleague of mine and I were talking about furniture the other day.

She was telling me how she doesn’t like to spend a lot of money on it. She was wearing a pretty blouse that she compared herself to how her grandmother may have dressed when she was younger.

She has great style but doesn’t really talk fashion. In fact, none of us really talk fashion in the newsroom outside of the occasional compliment of who’s wearing what or me getting teased on whether something is “Nieka-style” approved or not.

But our conversation got me thinking how people approach spending when it comes to decor, fashion and all the other things they surround themselves. It also made me think about how our treasured items, or the things we like to splurge on, partially offer some insight into who we are and what we value.

Personally, I’ve always found it intriguing to learn what type of music a person listens to or how they decided to decorate their home. I get a little more insight into who they are.

You tend to learn more about a person aside from what they’re telling you. I guess you can say I’m more of a visionary. My closet, my music and my home are very eclectic.

In my closet I have all of the style types. There is chic, classic, whimsical, bohemian and avant-garde looks, all sharing the same space. I love it all.

In my home there are hand-me-downs, antiques, thrift store bargains, imports and items we’ve bought brand new. My vehicle is bright in color but that doesn’t mean I like attention.

In most cases, your belongings and the way you dress tells a story. If not, you’ll at least make a great conversation piece.
