1975: Police officers investigating a disturbance complaint at a mobile home park found an estimated 7 pounds of marijuana.

Officers said the pot was in six plastic bags and 32 small “lid” packages. “We found it everywhere,” said Clovis Police narcotics Agent Dan Gibson.

Authorities said it was one of the largest quantities of marijuana intercepted on the illegal drug route in Clovis.

Four Cannon Air Force Base airmen were arrested and charged with illegal possession with intent to distribute.

1972: Charles Earnest Cooper, postmaster in Melrose for 18 years, had retired to spend time traveling and rock hunting, the Portales News-Tribune reported.

Charles and his wife Thelma planned to continue living on their farm a mile west of Melrose, enjoying their fruit and shade trees.

The new postmistress was Ruby Phillips, who had been a postal clerk for 13 years.

1965: About 100 people were expected to attend a meeting to institute the Fraternal Order of Eagles in Clovis.

State Secretary J. R. MacArthur of Albuquerque said 56 Clovis residents had signed up to join the Order and 50 were required before an organization could be instituted.

The Eagles are celebrating their 50th anniversary in Clovis this year.
