Grant Wagner pitched an abbreviated no-hitter and Portales scored a combined 26 runs as it swept New Mexico Military Institute in a doubleheader, 11-0 and 15-4, ion Wednesday at NMMI.
Wagner kept the Colts (7-4) hitters off balance in the first game, striking out eight while throwing just 77 pitches — 51 for strikes. Wagner was also a part of the offense for Portales (11-3) as he had two singles.
The Rams scored three runs in the first inning and four in the second off Colts pitcher Gavin Maloney to put the game away quick as it only went five innings.
Omar Legarda went 2-2 and also had two walks, Matt Martinez had two singles and scored a run and Jacob Salgado walked twice and came around to score both times. The Rams were also helped by five Colts errors in the game.
In the second game the Colts managed four hits and scored four runs in the fifth with the help of five walks by Rams pitcher Rey Ornelas, but it still wasn’t enough as Omar Legarda came a homerun short of the cycle and the Rams once again cruised to victory.
Legarda led the Rams offense going 4-5 with two doubles and a triple and the Rams never trailed as they scored four runs in the first inning with the help of five straight hits to start the game.
The Rams scored five more in the fourth, one three singles and three walks.
The Rams go back on the road Thursday to face Lovington.
