ARTESIA — The Portales girls tennis team captured team honors over the weekend in the Artesia Invitational.

The Lady Rams had a strong weekend in both singles and doubles as they faced Lovington, Silver, Raton and Onate.

Singles champions for PHS were McKenzie Bucksath at No. 3, Mireya Lopez at No. 4 and Zamorye Cox at No. 5, Hannah Evans and Daniele Ruiz placed third at No. 1 and No. 6 singles, respectively.

“We played hard for 14 hours on Friday and came away with three champions in singles,” Lady Rams coach Ann-Marie Bucksath said. “That’s not easy to do.”

The combo of Evans and Bucksath won at No. 1 doubles, while Samantha and Mireya Lopez won at No. 2 doubles and Cox teamed up with Ruiz to win at No. 3 doubles.

“We played through the heat and exhaustion on Saturday ended up winning all the doubles,” coach Bucksath said. “The girls really stepped it up and put everything out there this weekend, I’m really proud of them.”

The Rams and Lady Rams’ next outing is on April 7 when they host Roswell Goddard.
