CHS track teams face stiff competition

Staff report

AMARILLO — The competition was pretty stiff for Clovis High’s track teams in the Amarillo Relays on Friday and Saturday.

The CHS girls were fifth out of 12 teams with 34 points, while the boys came in 10th out of 13 with 18 points.

Amarillo Caprock’s boys (127) and Amarillo Tascosa’s girls (124) claimed team titles. CHS was the only non-Texas school in the event.

Senior Shelby Jones led the Lady Wildcats, placing second behind Pampa’s Cheyenne Williams in both shot put (38-3) and discus (116-7 1/2). Williams’ throws were 42-0 and 118-4, respectively.

Also for the Lady Cats, Monay Phillips was third in javelin (115-7) and Brittany Reed placed fifth in shot put (34-7).

Meantime, senior Heather Pastirchak was third in pole vault (10-0) and freshman Kelsey McNaughton took fourth in the 3,200 (11.57.93).

The boys’ top performance was a third by the 1,600 relay team of Micah Gray, Sebastian Roanhaus, Leroy Wilson and Tucker Dobbs (3:25.31). Barring something else happening over the weekend, CHS coach Darren Kelley said that gives the Wildcats the top time in Class 6A in the event, ahead of Volcano Vista (3:27).

Clovis, though, dropped the baton in Friday’s preliminaries in the 400 and 800 relays. Kelley said he thought the Cats would have done well in the latter.

“The 4-by-4 was pretty cool,” he said. “It was definitely a tough field, but we’re so young. We made a couple of mistakes on relays or we could’ve finished fifth or sixth.”

Other scoring finishes for the Cats included a fourth in the 400 by Dobbs (51.10), and sixths by Roanhaus in the 400 (52.72) and Taylor Stratton in the 300 hurdles (40.89).
