Some cloak indulgent spending well

Getting dressed on a daily basis, much less getting gussied up, is especially difficult when you’re healing from an invasive surgery. At least, that’s the excuse I gave my spouse after purchasing some over-priced flats. He never misses a beat when it comes to pointing out my newly purchased items. He can even walk by and glance into my closet (that we don’t share) and spot new things.

One time I bought some high heels, threw the box away and placed them on the shelf with the others as if they’d always been there and he still noticed.

Just when you think your husband doesn’t pay attention to these things, they definitely know when you’re spending money.

Well, at least mine notices it, and not because I leave a money trail. Maybe it’s because we both have an appreciation for shoes and clothing. So I guess it’s difficult to not pay attention to what each other is wearing.

But there are the lucky few who have a mastery in masking their indulgent spending. Case in point, my mother. She pulls these tasks off pretty well.

For instance, my parents will go on a trip and dad would say something like, “I like those shoes. When did you get those?”

“Oh, I’ve had these forever ... just didn’t have anywhere to wear them,” she’d reply. Or she’d say something like, “I can’t believe you don’t remember me wearing these same shoes a couple of months ago to that banquet we went to.” She always gets away with it.

Case two, my very own husband. It’s not just us women who know how to master spending and not having your spouse complain. He has a different strategy than mom when he wants to shop for himself. When he randomly buys me a new purse or something is when I know there are definitely new items in his closet. So I’d get to ask the big question this time.

“So, when did you get those dress slacks?”

“I got these on sale the same time I bought you that expensive purse,” he’d reply.

What can a girl say to that? Touché.
