State tournament roundup: Elida starts drive for five

ELIDA — The Elida Lady Tigers, who cruised to Class B state championships in each of the four years the NMAA sponsored the class, look like they could be on their way to another title.

Top-seeded Elida opened a 19-point halftime lead and cruised past Roosevelt County rival Floyd 72-27 on Friday in a first-round 1A matchup.

Senior guard Marily Varela led a balanced attack for the Lady Tigers (19-6) with 17 points, while senior guard Kenzee Criswell added 11. Nine Elida players scored.

Junior guard Neiry Mendoza paced the Lady Broncos (7-21) with 16 points.

Grady 59, Walatowa Charter 42 — At Grady, the eighth-seeded Lady Bronchos (15-11) broke open a close game by dominating the third quarter 17-7 and advanced to a 9:45 a.m. quarterfinal matchup against district rival Elida on Tuesday at Bernalillo H.S.

Only four players scored for Grady, but all reached double figures — freshman Jordyn Stowe with 22 points, senior Kyeli Stowe with 13 and senior Avery Jones and sophomore Jasmine Gonzales with 12 apiece.

Marley Berea had 12 points and Samantha Gachupin added 10 for the Lady Cougars (15-11).

Dora 59, Escalante 24 — At Dora, the eighth-seeded Lady Coyotes (14-11) fell behind 5-0 at the outset, but dominated from there in a lopsided win over No. 9 Escalante (20-8).

Sophomore Daelynn Lee scored 24 points for Dora ( while senior Taylor Dillard added 17.

Melrose 78, Shiprock Northwest 17 — At Melrose, the top-ranked but second-seeded Lady Buffs made short work of their guests, opening a 44-12 halftime lead and holding the Lady Falcons (16-13) scoreless in the final quarter with a running clock.

Senior Caley Barnard, coming off a 47-point outing in a District 6-2A tournament championship win at Logan, finished with 21 in this one, followed by junior guard Taylor Bostwick (19), sophomore post Reagan Carthel with 15 and junior guard Addisen Dial with 13.

Shiprock Northwest got almost all of its scoring from Abrianna Brown, who finished with 11 points.

Ramah 55, Fort Sumner 47 — At Ramah, the host Lady Mustangs won a tight one, outscoring the Vixens 15-10 in the final quarter.

Charlie Daniels had four 3-pointers and 30 points for seventh-seeded Ramah (22-5). Meantime, the Vixens (13-13) got 16 points from freshman Claudia Torres.
