Greyhounds go cold late, fall 55-47

With five minutes to go in the second half on Wednesday, Eastern New Mexico University looked like they could get their first Lone Star Conference win of the season with the game knotted.

Then Cameron went on an 11-0 run, and by the time the host Greyhounds scored again it was too late to escape from a 55-47 defeat at Greyhound Arena.

“Shooting the ball has been our achilles heel for the entire lone star slate,” Greyhounds coach Stott Carter said after the game. “We’ve really been struggling shooting the ball. Especially in the second half.”

During the pivotal run for the Aggies (11-11, 3-7), the Greyhounds (7-16, 0-10) missed six straight shots until Chris Wyms hit a layup with 1:13 left. Cameron iced it at the line, and dropped the Greyhounds to 0-10 in LSC play.

“We just gotta improve every day and keep fighting,” said Wyms, who scored 11.

Desmond Henry had a game-high 21 points and ten rebounds for the Aggies and KeDorian Sullivan chipped in with 10 points.

The Greyhounds began the second half up 28-26, but the Aggies started the half on a 8-2 run to take a 34-30 lead. Eastern fought back to take a 40-36 lead with just over nine minutes to go and but again went cold as the Aggies got back into the game.

“We had two stretches where we were up and we missed a few shots and a couple free throws,” said Carter. “We just couldn’t put the ball in the basket at the right time.”

The Greyhounds shot 3-of-21 from the perimeter and 32 percent from the floor.

John Gilliam led the Greyhounds with 17 points on the night and Lawerence Domingo added ten before he fouled out. Jason Clardy led the Greyhounds with eight rebounds.

The two teams tied with 26 points in the paint, and the Greyhounds out-scored the Aggies in points off turnovers 16-7, but the Aggies won the battle 10-6 in both second chance points and fast-break points.

Eastern started off slow as they were down 14-6 early in the game but a 5-0 run got them back into the game and a 10-0 run in which Wyms hit a layup and Gilliam added two free throws gave the Greyhounds 20-19 lead with seven to go in the first half.

The Greyhounds still have four chances to get a game in the win column before the regualor season ends and Carter believes his team can get a win.

“

We executed all of the game plan except for finishing shots,” Carter said. “A bucket here or there and this is a different game. I feel bad for the guys, they’re working hard and doing what they’re supposed to do, its just been a tough stretch right now.
