The Portales and Elida volleyball teams were chosen for this week’s state competition at Rio Rancho on Sunday by the New Mexico Activities Association.

The Lady Rams (9-13) drew the No. 8 seed in the 12-team field. They are bracketed with District 4-4A rival and top seed Ruidoso (15-3) and No. 12 Shiprock (10-10) in Pool A on Thursday at Santa Ana Star Center in Rio Rancho.

Rounding out the field are No. 2 Hope Christian (15-7), No. 7 Hatch Valley (14-8) and. No. 11 Pojoaque (10-11) in Pool B; No. 3 Silver (16-4), No. 6 Bosque (15-7) and No. 10 Kirtland Central (16-5) in Pool C, and No. 4 West Las Vegas (17-4) , No. 5 Sandia Prep (15-6) and No. 9 Wingate (16-5) in Pool D.

Meantime, Elida, which won all four Class B state titles before the group became Class 1A this year, takes a 22-0 record and the No. 1 seed into state competition and is paired in Pool A with Mosquero (12-9) and Reserve (11-7) at Rio Rancho High School.

The rest of the field, Pool B includes No. 2 Corona (20-2), No. 7 Quemado (12-7) and No. 11 Hondo (10-9); Pool C is made up of No. 3 Carrizozo (16-6), No. 6 Coronado (16-7) and No. 10 Cimarron (10-8) and Pool D consists of No. 4 Santa Fe Waldorf (19-3), No. 5 Springer (16-5), No. 9 Grady (17-6).

Pool play begins at 10:30 a.m.

First-round bracket matches are scheduled for Thursday night, with the pool winners drawing byes. Quarterfinal and semifinal play will be on Friday, with all championship matches set for Saturday at the Star Center.
