1967: Less than 12 percent of Curry County’s 13,741 registered voters turned out to participate in a state constitutional amendment election. County voters approved all eight proposals, though the state rejected two of them. One amendment would have provided for the use of state funds for loans to aid economic development — Curry County approved by 51 votes, but the state turned it down.

1960: Portales residents were encouraged to visit the new Portales High School for National Education Week. The building, completed just in time for the 1960-61 school year, cost $617,124.

1954: The National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues approved advancing the West Texas-New Mexico league from “C” classification to “B.” The higher classification meant more advanced players for Clovis, Amarillo and other teams in the league. A new salary limit was set at $4,600.

Fit for a king ...

1973: Red Crow restaurant, at 2121 N. Main in Clovis, offered a steakfinger dinner — complete with cole slaw, French fries, buttered corn on the cob and Texas toast — for $1.25. The “scrumptious” meal was “fit for a king,” a promotional ad claimed.

Go figure ...

40: estimated number of former Eastern New Mexico University faculty members expected to attend the university’s 40th homecoming activities in 1973. Former Athletic Director Al Garten and former President Floyd Golden were among those expected to attend the weekend gathering.
