PORTALES — Midwestern State made an early goal stand up and the Mustangs edged Eastern New Mexico University 1-0 on Saturday in men’s soccer at the ENMU pitch.
MSU’s Jevan Toledo headed in a corner kick by teammate Paul Sunderland into the upper right corner of the net just over 11 minutes into the contest.
The Greyhounds (6-6-3), who had an eight-match unbeaten streak (6-0-2) come to an end, had a chance to tie it early in the second half but senior Jehmaine Brooks’ shot from in front of the net went just wide of the right point. Brooks also had a header tipped just out of play by MSU keeper Nick Petolick about midway through the second half.
The win avenged a 2-1 home loss to ENMU for the Mustangs on Monday night at Wichita Falls, Texas, only MSU’s fourth home loss since the start of the 2008 season.
