New Mexico fishing report — Oct. 30

This fishing report, provided by Bill Dunn and the Department of Game and Fish, has been generated from the best information available from area officers and anglers. Conditions encountered after the report is compiled may differ, as stream, lake and weather conditions alter fish and angler activities.

Northeast

Charette Lakes: Fishing was fair using worms, Power Bait and Pistol Petes for trout. We had no reports on perch. Close for the season Oct. 31.

Cimarron River: Stream flow below Eagle Nest Monday was 22cfs. Trout fishing was good using copper John Barrs, prince nymphs, San Juan worms, spinners, worms and salmon eggs. Fishing at the Gravel Pit Lakes was slow.

Clayton Lake: Fishing was good using orange and gold spoons for trout up to 24 inches. We had no report on other species. Closes for the season Oct. 31.

Conchas Lake: Fishing was good using tubes, worms and crank baits for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. Fishing was fair using slab spoons for white bass. Fishing for catfish was slow but there were a few caught by anglers using liver and homemade dough baits. We had no reports on other species. The surface water temp was in the low 60s.

Eagle Nest Lake: Kokanee snagging was rated as fair this past week. Anglers did best working near the boat ramp. Fishing was very good using worms for perch. Trout fishing was good using Power Bait and salmon eggs. One northern pike in the 30-inch range was snagged. The boat ramp is impassible to big boats due to low water conditions. Canoes, kayaks and small boats may still be launched.

Hopewell Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using Power Bait, salmon eggs and Pistol Petes for trout.

Lake Maloya: Fishing was fair using rainbow Power Bait for trout. We had no reports on perch. Fishing pressure was light.

Los Pinos: Trout fishing was good using San Juan worms, bead head pheasant tails, prince nymphs, spinners and salmon eggs.

Manzano Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using Power Bait and salmon eggs for trout. We had no reports on other species.

Maxwell Lake 13: Closes for the season Oct. 31.

Monastery Lake: Trout fishing was fair to good using Pistol Petes, Power Bait and salmon eggs.

Morphy Lake: Closes for the season Oct. 31.

Mt View Ponds: Fishing was fair using Power Bait for trout.

Pecos River: Water flow near the town of Pecos Monday was 31cfs. Trout fishing was fair to good using prince nymphs, copper John Barrs and salmon eggs. We had no reports on catfish.

Red River: Water flow near the hatchery Monday was 57cfs. Fishing was good using copper John Barrs, bead head prince nymphs, poundmeisters and salmon eggs for trout.

Rio Grande: Water flow near the Taos Junction Bridge Monday was 476cfs. Trout fishing was fair to good using copper John Barrs, wooly buggers, San Juan worms, spinners and salmon eggs. Fishing was fair using spinners and wooly buggers for smallmouth bass. We had no reports on other species.

Rio Hondo: Stream flow near Valdez Monday was 14cfs. We had no reports from anglers.

Rio Pueblo: Stream flow near Penasco Monday was 7.4cfs. Fishing was slow.

Springer Lake: Fishing was slow for all species.

Storrie Lake: Fishing was fair using salmon eggs and Power Bait for trout. We had no reports on other species.

Ute Lake: Fishing for white bass and walleye slowed considerably from the previous week. A few fish were caught by anglers using slab spoons and minnows in 25 to 30 feet of water. Fishing for crappie was good for a few anglers who found schools in about 20 feet of water and caught several while using minnows and blade baits. We had no reports on other species. The surface water temp was in the low to mid 60s.

Northwest

Abiquiu Lake: Fishing for smallmouth bass and walleye was slow but there were a few caught by anglers using crank baits, tubes and swim baits. We had no reports on other species.

Animas River: Water flow near Aztec Monday morning was 507cfs.

Bluewater Lake: Fishing pressure was very light and fishing was slow for all species with just a few tiger musky caught and released by anglers using jerk baits, big streamers and crank baits. Anglers should be aware that it is illegal to use baitfish at this lake.

Canjilon Lakes: Trout fishing was fair to good using Power Bait, salmon eggs and Pistol Petes under a bubble.

Chama River: Monday morning water flows below El Vado and Abiquiu were 79cfs and 97cfs respectively. Fishing below El Vado was good using salmon eggs, night crawlers,

San Juan worms, egg patterns and copper John Barrs for a mixed bag of rainbow and brown trout. Anglers also reported catching and releasing a few cutthroat trout. Fishing below Abiquiu was fair to good using San Juan worms, copper John Barrs, worms, and salmon eggs for rainbow trout.

El Vado Lake: Fishing was fair to good using salmon eggs and Power Bait for rainbow trout. Kokanee snagging was slow. We had no reports on other species.

Fenton Lake: Trout fishing was very good using 1/8-ounce square billed crank baits, olive and black Pistol Petes, Power Bait and worms.

Heron Lake: Fishing was slow for all species and fishing pressure was very light. All boat ramps have been closed due to low water conditions. Small boats, canoes and kayaks may still be used. Possession of kokanee is not permitted here or on Willow Creek during the closed season, which runs from Oct. 1 through Nov. 13.

Jackson Lake: Fishing was fair using salmon eggs for trout. We had no reports on others species.

Jemez Waters: Stream flow on the Jemez as of Monday was 20cfs.

Laguna Del Campo: Closes for the season Oct. 31.

Lake Farmington: Fishing was good using salmon eggs, Power Bait, Pistol Petes and spinners for trout. We had no reports on other species.

Navajo Lake: Kokanee snagging continued to be very good this past week with several limits reported by anglers working north of the Pine boat ramp. Fishing for bass was slow with just a few caught by anglers using crank baits. Fishing was slow to fair using roe sacs and salmon eggs for rainbow trout. We had no reports on other species. The surface water temp was in the low 60s.

San Juan: Water flow below Navajo Monday was 348cfs.Trout fishing through the Quality Waters was good using red annelids, San Juan worms, crystal flash, foam wing emergers, Griffith’s gnats and scintillas. Fishing through the bait waters was fair to good using salmon eggs, San Juan worms, copper John Barrs and wooly buggers.

Santa Cruz Lake: This water has closed to boating and will remain closed until mid-July 2015. The only fishing access will be from the overlook, which will remain open. The Bureau of Land Management will be renovating the north lake campground, boat launch, picnic area and main access road.

Seven Springs Brood Pond: Trout fishing was good using Power Bait and salmon eggs.

Tingley Beach: Fishing at the Youth and Central ponds was good using salmon eggs, worms, Power Bait and spinners for trout. We had no reports on other species or from anglers fishing the Bob Gerding Catch and Release Pond.

Southwest

Bear Canyon: Fishing was fair to good using worms and Power Bait for trout. Fishing was good using stink baits and liver for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Caballo Lake: Fishing was slow but there were a few catfish and white bass caught this past week. Best bait for the catfish was chicken liver. The white bass were caught by anglers using crank baits. The water was murky.

Elephant Butte Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using crank baits and slab spoons for white bass. Fishing was slow to fair using crank baits, swim baits and tubes for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass. Fishing was fair using chicken liver, dead shad and shrimp for catfish. We had no reports on other species. The surface water temp was in the mid to high 60s.

Escondida Lake: Fishing was slow for all species.

Gila River: Water flow on the Gila as of this past Monday was 108cfs. Fishing on the East Fork was good using wooly buggers and small hopper patterns for smallmouth bass. We had no reports on other species or from the other forks.

Glenwood Pond: Fishing was good using Power Bait and salmon eggs for trout.

Percha Dam: Fishing was slow for all species.

Rio Grande: Water flow below Elephant Butte Monday was 28cfs. Fishing was fair using night crawlers and liver for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Young Pond: Fishing was fair to good using liver, worms and homemade dough baits for catfish. Fishing for trout was slow to fair using worms and salmon eggs. We had no reports on other species.

Southeast

Black River: Stream flow at Malaga Monday was 123cfs. We had no reports from anglers.

Blue Hole Park Pond: Fishing was slow for all species. Fishing pressure was very light.

Bonito Lake: Closed.

Bosque Redondo: Fishing was slow for all species.

Brantley Lake: The main entrance to the park has reopened. Anglers are to practice catch-and-release for all fish here as high levels of DDT were found in several fish.

Chaparral Park Lake: Fishing was slow for all species.

Green Meadow Lake: Fishing was slow for all species. Fishing pressure was very light.

Greene Acres Lake: Fishing was slow for all species.

Grindstone Reservoir: Fishing was good using Power Bait, worms and salmon eggs for trout. We had no reports on other species.

Lake Van: Fishing was slow for all species. Fishing pressure was light.

Oasis Park Lake: Fishing was slow for all species. The Park and Friends of Oasis are sponsoring their 24th annual Kids Fishin’ Clinic Nov. 1 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.. For pre-registration or more information contact the Oasis State Park office at 575.356.5331.

Pecos River: Stream flow below Sumner Lake Monday was 85cfs. Fishing was slow for all species.

Perch Lake: Fishing was slow for all species.

Ruidoso River: Stream flow at Ruidoso Monday was 13cfs.

Santa Rosa Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using tubes, swim baits, spinner baits and crank baits for smallmouth bass. We had no reports on other species.

Sumner Lake: Fishing was fair trolling crank baits for white bass. Fishing was fair to good using tubes, jigs and salt craws for smallmouth bass. We had no reports on other species. The surface water temp was in the low 60s.
