Zias fall to West Texas A&M in LSC play

Staff report

West Texas A&M ran its volleyball winning streak against Eastern New Mexico University to 18 on Tuesday night, but not without a bit of a scare from the Zias.

ENMU led virtually all the way in winning the second set in squaring the match and hung tough with the Lady Buffs the rest of the way before losing 25-20, 19-25, 25-22, 25-23 at Greyhound Arena.

ENMU battled through six ties and two leagc changes during the fourth set, but the Lone Star Conference-leading Lady Buffs took the lead for good at 24-23 on a kill by Jessica Johnson and got an attack error from the Zias on match point.

ENMU (8-11, 3-7 LSC) now trails the Lady Buffs 69-15 all-time. The Zias last won in three sets at Greyhound Arena on Oct. 24, 2004.

WT, which extended its winning streak to 11 matches, nearly got a triple double from Kameryn Hays, who finished with 12 kills, 21 assists and nine digs, while Johnson also had 12 kills and Lexi Davis added 11 to go with four blocks (one solo).

The Zias were led by sophomore outside hitter Courtney Lawson with 13 kills and eight digs and Lauren Frye with 12 kills. Senior setter Kennedi Catano had 22 assists while Clovis freshman defensive specialist Andrea Aguklar posted a match-high 16 digs.

The Zias return to action with a 7 p.m. non-league matchup today at Greyhound Arena against Texas-Permian Basin.
