N.M. Fishing Report — Sept. 25

This fishing report, provided by Bill Dunn and the Department of Game and Fish, has been generated from the best information available from area officers and anglers. Conditions encountered after the report is compiled may differ, as stream, lake and weather conditions alter fish and angler activities.

Northeast

Charette Lakes: Trout fishing was fair using Power Bait. Fishing was slow to fair using worms for perch. Cimarron River: Stream flow below Eagle Nest on Monday was 15 cfs. Trout fishing was good using parachute Adams, micro mays, bead-head pheasant tails, copper John Barrs, spinners, worms and salmon eggs. We had no reports from the Gravel Pit Lakes. Clayton Lake: Fishing pressure continued to be light this past week but there were a few trout caught by anglers using gold spoons. Conchas Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using crank baits, jerk baits, tubes, worms and salt craws for smallmouth bass and an occasional largemouth bass. Fishing was slow to fair using crank baits for white bass. Fishing for catfish was fair using stink baits, chicken liver and homemade dough baits. We had no reports on other species. The surface water temp was in the low to mid 70s. Coyote Creek: Trout fishing was fair to good using small copper John Barrs, salmon eggs and worms. Eagle Rock Lake: Trout fishing was very good using worms, Power Bait and spinners. Eagle Nest Lake: Fishing was fair to good using Platte River specials tipped with Power Bait for trout and an occasional kokanee. Fishing was slow to fair using spoons and swim baits for northern pike. Fishing was good using worms for perch. Four-wheel-drive vehicles are recommended for launching boats. Gallinas River: We had no reports from anglers this week. Hopewell Lake: Trout fishing was fair to good using Power Bait, night crawlers and small dry flies. Lake Alice: Fishing was fair to good using Power Bait, salmon eggs and grasshoppers for trout. Lake Maloya: Trout fishing was good using green and orange and garlic-scented Power Bait for fish up to 20 inches. We had no reports on perch. Los Pinos: Trout fishing was good using elk hair caddis, parachute Adams, bead-head hares’ ears, small spinners and worms. Manzano Lake: Fishing was slow for all species. Maxwell Lake 13: We had no reports from anglers this week. Monastery Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week. Morphy Lake: Fishing was fair using worms, Power Bait, Pistol Petes and salmon eggs for trout. Mt. View Ponds: We had no reports from anglers this week. Pecos River: Water flow near the town of Pecos on Monday was 41 cfs. Trout fishing was fair using worms, salmon eggs, San Juan worms and small streamers. Fishing in the Villanueva area was slow to fair using night crawlers and salmon eggs for catfish. Red River: Water flow near the hatchery on Monday was 27 cfs. Fishing was good using poundmeisters, San Juan worms, bead-head hares’ ears, bead-head wooly buggers, spinners, night crawlers and salmon eggs for trout. Rio Costilla: We had no reports from anglers this week. Rio Grande: Water flow near the Taos Junction Bridge on Monday was 291 cfs. Trout fishing was good using wooly worms, poundmeisters, wooly buggers, San Juan worms, spinners and night crawlers. A few smallmouth bass were caught by anglers using wooly buggers and spinners. We had no reports on northern pike. Rio Hondo: Stream flow near Valdez on Monday was 14 cfs. Fishing was fair to good using elk hair caddis and bead-head hares’ ears for trout. Rio Mora: Stream flow near Terrero on Monday was 7.8 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week. Rio Pueblo: Stream flow near Penasco on Monday was 6.2 cfs. Fishing was good using poundmeisters and bead-head pheasant tails for trout. Santa Barbara: We had no reports from anglers this week. Shuree Ponds: We had no reports from anglers this week. Springer Lake: Fishing was slow for all species. Storrie Lake: Fishing pressure was light and fishing was slow for all species. Stubblefield Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week. Ute Lake: Fishing was good using tubes, chigger craws, salt craws and worms for smallmouth bass. A few were also caught by anglers using jerk baits. Fishing for white bass slowed down but there were a few taken on crank baits. Fishing for all other species was slow. The surface water temp was in the low to mid 70s.

Northwest

Abiquiu Lake: Fishing was good using crank baits, jerk baits, swim baits, chigger craws and tubes for smallmouth bass. Fishing for walleye was fair using crank baits, tubes and bottom-bouncer night crawler rigs. We had no reports on other species. The surface water temp was in the mid to high 60s. Animas River: Water flow near Aztec on Monday morning was 452 cfs.We had no reports from anglers this week. Albuquerque Area Drains: We had no reports from anglers this week. Bluewater Lake: Fishing was fair using swim baits, crank baits, jointed Rapalas and jigs for tiger musky. Fishing for all other species was slow. The surface water temp was in the low 60s. Anglers should be aware that it is illegal to use bait fish at this lake. Brazos River: We had no reports from anglers this week. Canjilon Lakes: Trout fishing was fair to good for anglers using Pistol Petes and worms. Fishing pressure was light. Chama River: Monday morning water flows below El Vado and Abiquiu were 261 cfs and 270 cfs respectively. Fishing below El Vado was good using salmon eggs, night crawlers, Panther Martins, wooly buggers, bead-head hares’ ears, bead-head pheasant tails and copper John Barrs for a mixed bag of rainbow and brown trout. We had no reports from below Abiquiu. Cochiti Lake: Fishing was fair to good using jigs, tubes, salt craws and jerk baits for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. Fishing was fair using crank baits and jerk baits for white bass. We had no reports on other species. El Vado Lake: Fishing was fair to good using Power Bait, worms, salmon eggs and spinners for trout. We had no reports on other species. Fenton Lake: Trout fishing was slow to fair using yellow Power Bait and worms. Heron Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week. All boat ramps have been closed due to low water conditions. Small boat, canoes and kayaks may still be used. Jackson Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week. Jemez Waters: Stream flow on the Jemez as of Monday was 9.2 cfs. Fishing on the Rio Cebolla was good using small hopper patterns, small bead-head hares’ ears, grasshoppers, salmon eggs and worms. Fishing on the Jemez was fair for anglers using worms, salmon eggs and copper John Barrs. We had no reports from other Jemez waters. Laguna Del Campo: Fishing was good using worms, Power Bait and wooly buggers for trout. Lake Farmington: We had no reports from anglers this week. Navajo Lake:Hot spot for bass: Fishing continued to be very good this past week for anglers fishing for bass. They did well using senkos, tubes, curly tail grubs, crank baits and jerk baits. Most of the smallmouth bass were small. Fishing was fair using crank baits and jerk baits for northern pike. Fishing was good using worms for perch. Fishing was fair using chicken liver and night crawlers for catfish. A few kokanee were caught by anglers trolling the Francis Canyon area and near the dam. Best baits were Arnies and Z Rays tipped with corn and trolled behind cow bells. We had no reports on other species. The surface water temp was in the low 70s. San Gregorio: We had no reports from anglers this week. San Juan River: Water flow below Navajo Dam on Monday was 490 cfs. Trout fishing through the Quality Waters was good using small gray and black emergers, dead chickens, Griffith’s gnats, San Juan worms, parachute Adams and small bead-head pheasant tails. Fishing through the bait waters was fair to good using jerk baits, night crawlers, hoppers and wooly buggers. Santa Cruz Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week. The lake will close to boating and fishing from Oct. l through mid-July of 2015. The Bureau of Land Management will be renovating the north lake campground, boat launch, picnic area and main access road. Seven Springs Brood Pond: Trout fishing was good using Power Bait and small wet flies. Tingley Beach: We had no reports from anglers this week. Trout Lakes: Fishing was fair using worms, wooly buggers and spinners for trout.

Southwest

Bear Canyon: We had no reports from anglers this week. Bill Evans Lake: Fishing was slow for all species. Caballo Lake: Fishing was fair using night crawlers, chicken liver and stink baits for catfish. We had no reports on other species. Elephant Butte Lake: Fishing was fair using crank baits, topwater lures, spinners and slab spoons for white bass. Fishing was fair using swim baits, crank baits, tubes, jerk baits and worms for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass. Fishing was fair using chicken liver, homemade dough bait and night crawlers for catfish. We had no reports on other species. The surface water temp was in the mid 70s. Escondida Lake: Fishing was slow for all species. Gila River: Water flow on the Gila as of this past Monday was 1,030 cfs. Heavy rains and high water kept anglers away this past week. We had no reports. Glenwood Pond: Trout fishing was fair to good using Power Bait. Lake Roberts: We had no reports from anglers this week. Percha Dam: Fishing was slow for all species. Quemado Lake: Fishing was good using wooly buggers, Pistol Petes, worms and Power Bait for trout. We had no reports on tiger musky. Rio Grande: Water flow below Elephant Butte on Monday was .70 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week. Snow Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week. Young Pond: Fishing was slow to fair using chicken livers and homemade dough baits for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Southwest

Bear Canyon: We had no reports from anglers this week. Bill Evans Lake: Fishing was slow for all species. Caballo Lake: Fishing was slow to fair trolling crank baits for a mixed bag of white bass and walleye. Fishing was fair using night crawlers and stink baits for channel catfish. We had no reports on other species. Elephant Butte Lake: Fishing was fair using crank baits, topwater lures, grubs and minnows for white bass. Fishing for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass was fair using crank baits, jerk baits, tubes and salt craws. Fishing was fair to good using dead shiners, chicken liver and night crawlers for catfish. We had no reports on other species. The surface water temp was in the mid to high 70s. Escondida Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week. Gila River: Water flow on the Gila as of this past Monday was 63 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week. Glenwood Pond: Trout fishing was fair to good using Power Bait. Lake Roberts: The water level is still down but walk-in fishing has been good. Anglers are using worms, stink baits and chicken liver for a mixed bag of catfish and bass. Percha Dam: Fishing was slow for all species. Quemado Lake: Fishing was good using wooly buggers, Pistol Petes, worms and Power Bait for trout. We had no reports on tiger musky. Rio Grande: Water flow below Elephant Butte on Monday was .57 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week. Snow Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week. Young Pond: Fishing was slow to fair using chicken livers, hot dogs and homemade dough baits for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Southeast

Bataan Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week. Black River: Stream flow at Malaga on Monday was 769 cfs. We had no reports from anglers. Blue Hole Park Pond: Fishing was slow to fair using night crawlers and hot dogs for catfish. A few trout were caught by anglers using Power Bait and salmon eggs. Bonito Lake: Closed. Bosque Redondo: Fishing was slow for all species. Fishing pressure was very light. Bottomless Lakes: We had no reports from anglers this week. Brantley Lake: As of Monday morning, County Road 30, which is the main entrance to the park, was closed. The lake area is currently experiencing flooding conditions. Anglers are to practice catch-and-release for all fish here as high levels of DDT were found in several fish. Prior to the flooding, fishing was good using crank baits, swim baits and tubes for big largemouth bass and white bass. Carlsbad Municipal Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week. Chaparral Park Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week. El Rito Creek: We had no reports from anglers this week. Eunice Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week. Green Meadow Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week. Greene Acres Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week. Grindstone Reservoir: Fishing was good using Power Bait, worms and salmon eggs for trout. We had no reports on other species. Jal Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week. Lake Van: Fishing was slow for all species. Oasis Park Lake: Fishing pressure was light this past week and fishing was slow for all species. Pecos River: Stream flow below Sumner Lake on Monday was 81 cfs. Fishing was slow but there were a few catfish caught by anglers using chicken liver, stink baits and night crawlers. We had no reports on other species. Perch Lake: Fishing was slow for all species. Ruidoso River: Stream flow at Ruidoso on Monday was 103 cfs. We had no reports from anglers. Santa Rosa Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using chicken liver and stink baits for catfish. We had no reports on other species. Fishing pressure was very light. Sumner Lake: Fishing was slow but there were a few catfish and one small walleye caught by anglers using night crawlers.
