N.M. fishing report — Sept. 11

This fishing report, provided by Bill Dunn and the Department of Game and Fish, has been generated from the best information available from area officers and anglers. Conditions encountered after the report is compiled may differ, as stream, lake and weather conditions alter fish and angler activities.

Northeast

Charette Lakes: Trout fishing was rated as good this past week as several anglers caught limits. Boaters did well trolling Christmas tree-worm combinations while bank anglers did best using Power Bait. Cimarron River: Stream flow below Eagle Nest on Monday was 31 cfs. Trout fishing was good using dry dropper combinations. Elk hair caddis and parachute Adams have been the popular dries this past week. A few trout were also caught by anglers using spinners and worms. We had no reports from the Gravel Pit Lakes. Clayton Lake: Fishing pressure was very light and fishing was slow for all species. Conchas Lake: Fishing was fair trolling crank baits for white bass. A few were also caught by anglers using topwater lures. Fishing for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass was fair using crank baits, jerk baits, tubes, senkos, Pop Rs and buzz baits. We had no reports on other species. The surface water temp was in the mid to upper 70s. Coyote Creek: Trout fishing was fair using salmon eggs and worms. Eagle Rock Lake: Trout fishing was fair to good using worms, Power Bait and spinners. Eagle Nest Lake: Perch fishing was good using worms from the bank and from boats. Fishing for trout was fair trolling Platte River specials, Arnies and Panther Martins tipped with Power Bait. A few were also caught by anglers fishing from the bank and using Power Bait. Anglers trolling also picked up a few kokanee. We had no reports on northern pike. The 22nd Annual Fish Fest will be Sept. 20-28. For details call (575) 377-6941. Gallinas River: Trout fishing was good using worms, elk hair caddis and bead-head hares’ ears. Hopewell Lake: Fishing was fair using worms and Power Bait for trout. Lake Alice: We had no reports from anglers this week. Lake Maloya: Trout fishing was fair using Power Bait, Pistol Petes, wooly buggers and spinners. Fishing for small perch was good using worms. Los Pinos: Trout fishing was fair to good using small spinners, salmon eggs and worms. Manzano Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week. Maxwell Lake 13: Fishing was slow for all species. Monastery Lake: Trout fishing was very good using worms, Pistol Petes, Power Bait and salmon eggs. Morphy Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week. Mt View Ponds: We had no reports from anglers this week. Pecos River: Water flow near the town of Pecos on Monday was 56 cfs. Trout fishing was very good using worms, Power Bait, salmon eggs, San Juan worms, bead-head pheasant tail nymphs and small streamers. We had no reports of catfish in the Villanueva area. Red River: Water flow near the hatchery on Monday was 60 cfs. Fishing was good using poundmeisters, bead-head hares’ ears, elk hair caddis, copper John Barrs, spinners, night crawlers and salmon eggs for trout. We had no reports from the hatchery pond. Rio Costilla: Water flow below the dam as of Monday morning was 6 cfs. Trout fishing was good using elk hair caddis, bead-head pheasant tails, bead-head hares’ ears and worms. Rio Grande: Water flow near the Taos Junction Bridge on Monday was 281 cfs. Trout fishing was good using streamers, poundmeisters, copper John Barrs, spinners and night crawlers. We had no reports on other species. Rio Hondo: Stream flow near Valdez on Monday was 18 cfs. Fishing was good using royal humpys, elk hair caddis and bead-head hares’ ears for trout. Rio Mora: Stream flow near Terrero on Monday was 16 cfs. Trout fishing was good using San Juan worms, bead-head prince nymphs and bead-head hares’ ears. Adena Robertson and Angie Cherry were here last week and caught trout up to 17.5 inches. They were using bead-head nymphs with a split shot and wanted to report the fish were caught with no help from the guys. Rio Pueblo: Stream flow near Penasco on Monday was 7.7 cfs. Fishing was good using poundmeisters, tan elk hair caddis and San Juan worms for trout. Santa Barbara: We had no reports from anglers this week. Shuree Ponds: We had no reports from anglers this week. Springer Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using cut bait and worms for catfish. We had no reports on other species. Storrie Lake: Trout fishing was fair to good using garlic Power Bait, worms and spinners. We had no reports on other species. Stubblefield Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week. Ute Lake: Heavy rains in the area may have contributed to light fishing pressure on the lake this past week. The only reports received were from anglers fishing for white bass. They reported action as slow to fair at best and the best results came from trolling crank baits. The surface water temp was in the mid 70s.

Northwest

Abiquiu Lake: Fishing was good trolling crank baits and bottom-bouncer night crawler rigs for walleye. Fishing was fair to good using crank baits, tubes and senkos for smallmouth bass. We had no reports on other species. Animas River: Water flow near Aztec on Monday morning was 128 cfs.Trout fishing was fair to good using wooly buggers and worms. Albuquerque Area Drains: We had no reports from anglers this week. Bluewater Lake: Fishing was fair using jerk baits, swim baits, spinners, streamers and topwater lures for tiger musky. We had no reports on other species. Anglers should be aware that it is illegal to use bait fish at this lake. Brazos River: We had no reports from anglers this week. Canjilon Lakes: Trout fishing on the upper lake was good for anglers using Pistol Petes and worms. Chama River: Monday morning water flows below El Vado and Abiquiu were 605 cfs and 570 cfs respectively. Fishing below El Vado was good using night crawlers, Power Bait, Rapalas, Panther Martins and weighted wooly buggers for a mixed bag of rainbow and brown trout. Fishing below Abiquiu was slow. Cochiti Lake: Fishing was fair using crank baits and jerk baits for white bass. Fishing for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass was slow but there were a few caught by anglers using crank baits, jerk baits, tubes and senkos. Fishing was slow to fair using worms for bluegill. We had no reports on other species. El Vado Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week. Fenton Lake: Trout fishing was slow. The moss and weeds in the lake are still quite thick but are starting to die off. Heron Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week. All boat ramps have been closed due to low water conditions. Small boats, canoes and kayaks may still be used. Jackson Lake: Fishing was slow for all species. Jemez Waters: Stream flow on the Jemez as of Monday was 9.6 cfs. Fishing on the Rio Cebolla was very good using elk hair caddis, small brassies, small bead-head hares’ ears, beetles, salmon eggs and worms. Fishing on the Rio Las Vacas was fair to good using worms, elk hair caddis, ants and parachute Adams. Fishing on the Jemez and Rio Guadalupe was slow. Fishing on the Valles Caldera was very good for anglers on the San Antonio and the East Fork. They were using small hoppers, ants and beetles. The best reports from the East Fork again this week came from anglers fishing near the headwaters. Laguna Del Campo: Fishing was slow but there were a few trout caught by anglers using Power Bait and small dry flies. Lake Farmington: We had no reports from anglers this week. Navajo Lake:Hot spot for bass: Fishing was very good using senkos, crank baits, tubes, jerk baits and topwater lures for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. Fishing was good using crank baits and jerk baits for northern pike. Fishing was good using worms and small jigs for perch. Fishing was fair to good using chicken liver and night crawlers for catfish. We had no reports on other species. The surface water temp was in the low 70s. San Gregorio: We had no reports from anglers this week. San Juan River: Water flow below Navajo Dam on Monday was 682 cfs. Trout fishing through the Quality Waters was good using midge clusters, small wooly buggers, Griffith’s gnats, San Juan worms, fluff baetis, parachute Adams and small bead-head pheasant tails. Fishing through the bait waters was good using jerk baits, Panther Martins, night crawlers, copper John Barrs and wooly buggers. Santa Cruz Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week. Seven Springs Brood Pond: We had no reports from anglers this week. Tingley Beach: Fishing at the Youth Pond and Central Pond was slow to fair using shrimp, night crawlers, homemade dough bait and hot dogs for catfish. We had no reports on other species. Fishing at the Bob Gerding Catch and Release Pond was slow. Trout Lakes: Fishing was good using worms, Power Bait, bead-head hares’ ears and spinners for trout.

Southwest

Bear Canyon: Fishing was slow for all species. Bill Evans Lake: Fishing was slow for all species. Caballo Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using minnows, stink bait and night crawlers for channel catfish. We had no reports on other species. Elephant Butte Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using crank baits, grubs and minnows for white bass. Fishing for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass was slow. Fishing was fair to good using shiners, shrimp, hot dogs, chicken liver and night crawlers for catfish. We had no reports on other species. The surface water temp was in the high 70s. Escondida Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using shrimp, hot dogs, liver and night crawlers for catfish. Fishing for all other species was slow. Gila River: Water flow on the Gila as of this past Monday was 55 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week. Glenwood Pond: We had no reports from anglers this week. Lake Roberts: We had no reports from anglers this week. Percha Dam: Fishing was slow for all species. Quemado Lake: Fishing was fair using crank baits, jerk baits and silver minnows for tiger musky. Fishing for trout was fair to good using Power Bait, Pistol Petes and worms. Rio Grande: Water flow below Elephant Butte on Monday was .35 cfs. Fishing was slow for all species. Snow Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week. Young Pond: Fishing was slow to fair using hot dogs, worms and liver for catfish. We had on reports on other species.

Southeast

Bataan Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week. Black River: Stream flow at Malaga on Monday was 46 cfs. We had no reports from anglers. Blue Hole Park Pond: Fishing was slow but there were a few catfish caught by anglers using night crawlers and hot dogs. Bonito Lake: Closed. Bosque Redondo: Fishing was slow for all species. Bottomless Lakes: We had no reports from anglers this week. Brantley Lake: Anglers are to practice catch-and-release for all fish here as high levels of DDT were found in several fish. Fishing for white bass was good using crank baits, tubes, topwater lures and jerk baits. Anglers fishing for bass also caught a few catfish. Carlsbad Municipal Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week. Chaparral Park Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using worms, liver and dough bait for catfish. Fishing for all other species was slow. El Rito Creek: We had no reports from anglers this week. Eunice Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week. Green Meadow Lake: Fishing was fair using night crawlers and homemade dough bait for catfish. We had no reports on other species. Greene Acres Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using hot dogs and night crawlers for catfish. We had no reports on other species. Grindstone Reservoir: Fishing was good using Super Dupers, Power Bait, worms and salmon eggs for trout. Fishing was slow to fair using worms for bluegill. We had no reports on other species. Laura Lujan from Las Cruces along with her husband had a good time here last Friday. They were using orange Power Bait and caught five rainbow trout that measured about 13 inches each. Jal Lake: Fishing was slow but there were a few catfish caught by anglers using night crawlers and liver. Lake Van: Fishing was slow for all species. Oasis Park Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week. Pecos River: Stream flow below Sumner Lake on Monday was 93 cfs. Fishing was slow to fair using liver and night crawlers for catfish. We had no reports on other species. Perch Lake: Fishing was slow for all species. Ruidoso River: Stream flow at Ruidoso on Monday was 76 cfs. We had no reports from anglers. Santa Rosa Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using crawdads and chicken liver for catfish. Fishing was slow to fair using minnows, crank baits and night crawlers for walleye. We had no reports on other species. Sumner Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using Zeke’s garlic and cheese baits and chicken liver for catfish. We had no reports on other species.
