Fishing report — Sept. 4

This fishing report, provided by Bill Dunn and the Department of Game and Fish, has been generated from the best information available from area officers and anglers. Conditions encountered after the report is compiled may differ, as stream, lake and weather conditions alter fish and angler activities.

Northeast

Charette Lakes: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Cimarron River: Stream flow below Eagle Nest on Monday was 15 cfs. Trout fishing was good using Royal Wullfs, small copper John Barrs, stimulators, salmon eggs and worms. Fishing at the Gravel Pit Lakes was fair using Pistol Petes.

Clayton Lake: Fishing was fair to good using rainbow Power Bait for trout. We had no reports on other species. Fishing pressure was light.

Conchas Lake: Fishing was fair to good using slab spoons and crank baits for white bass. Fishing for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass was slow to fair using crank baits, jerk baits, tubes, chigger craws and jigs. Fishing for catfish was slow to fair using liver, hot dogs and shrimp. We had no reports on other species. The surface water temp was in the upper 70s.

Coyote Creek: Trout fishing was good using worms.

Eagle Rock Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Eagle Nest Lake: Perch fishing was good using worms from the bank and from boats. Fishing for trout was fair using Power Bait and spinners from the bank and trolling Platte River specials, Arnies and Panther Martins tipped with Power Bait. Anglers trolling also picked up a few kokanee. Fishing for northern pike was slow but there were a few caught by anglers using spinners and Platte River specials. Gallinas River: Trout fishing was good using worms, salmon eggs, elk hair caddis and bead-head hare’s ears.

Hopewell Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using night crawlers and Power Bait for trout.

Lake Alice: Trout fishing was slow with just a few fish caught by anglers using Pistol Petes and Power Bait.

Lake Maloya: Trout fishing was slow to fair using Power Bait, Pistol Petes, parachute Adams, wooly buggers and hare’s ears. Fishing for small perch was good using worms and Pistol Petes.

Los Pinos: Trout fishing was good using small spinners, San Juan worms, salmon eggs and worms.

Manzano Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Maxwell Lake 13: Fishing was slow for all species.

Monastery Lake: Trout fishing was fair using bead-head hare’s ears, Power Bait and salmon eggs.

Morphy Lake: Trout fishing was fair using worms, salmon eggs and night crawlers.

Mt. View Ponds: Trout fishing was good using salmon eggs, Power Bait and worms.

Pecos River: Water flow near the town of Pecos on Monday was 58 cfs. Trout fishing was very good using worms, salmon eggs, elk hair caddis, San Juan worms, bead-head hare’s ears and pheasant tail nymphs. Fishing for catfish in the Villanueva area was fair for anglers drifting night crawlers.

Red River: Water flow near the hatchery on Monday was 48 cfs. Fishing was good using poundmeisters, bead-head hare’s ears, spinners, night crawlers and salmon eggs for trout. We had no reports from the hatchery pond.

Rio Costilla: Water flow below the dam as of Monday morning was 52 cfs. Trout fishing was very good using royal trudes, bead-head hare’s ears and stimulators.

Rio Grande: Water flow near the Taos Junction Bridge on Monday was 307 cfs. Trout fishing was fair to good using sculpins, wooly buggers, egg sucking leeches, spinners and night crawlers. Fishing was fair using spinners and wooly buggers for smallmouth bass. We had no reports on other species.

Rio Hondo: Stream flow near Valdez on Monday was 18 cfs. Fishing was good using royal trudes, royal humpys and hare’s ears for trout.

Rio Mora: Stream flow near Terrero on Monday was 12 cfs. Trout fishing was good using San Juan worms, elk hair caddis and hare’s ears.

Rio Pueblo: Stream flow near Penasco on Monday was 8.7 cfs. Fishing was good using hare’s ears, poundmeisters and San Juan worms for trout.

Santa Barbara: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Shuree Ponds: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Springer Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using cut bait and chicken liver for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Storrie Lake: Fishing was slow for all species.

Stubblefield Lake: Fishing was fair using worms for bluegill. We had no reports on other species.

Ute Lake: Hot spot for white bass: Fishing continued to be very good this past week for anglers fishing for white bass. They were jigging slab spoons and blade baits over 30 feet of water. Fishing was fair using jig and minnow and jig and night crawler rigs at 20 to 22 feet for walleye. Fishing was fair using chigger craws and in line spinners for smallmouth bass. Fishing was fair to good using stink bait over baited holes for catfish. We had no reports on other species. The surface water temp was in the high 70s.

Northwest

Abiquiu Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using swim baits, spinner night crawler rigs and jig and minnow combinations and curly tail grubs for walleye. Fishing was slow to fair using jerk baits, tubes, crank baits and wooly buggers for smallmouth bass. The best catch reports again this week came from anglers fishing the upper end of the lake. Anglers working the south end of the lake reported fishing as very slow. We had no reports on other species.

Animas River: Water flow near Aztec on Monday morning was 240 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Albuquerque Area Drains: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Bluewater Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using jerk baits, swim baits, spinners and topwater lures for tiger musky. Fishing was slow to fair using hot dogs and liver for catfish. Fishing for trout was slow. Anglers should be aware that it is illegal to use bait fish at this lake.

Brazos River: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Canjilon Lakes: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Chama River: Monday morning water flows below El Vado and Abiquiu were 598 cfs and 570 cfs respectively. Fishing below El Vado was good using worms, Power Bait, salmon eggs, Rapalas, Panther Martins and weighted wooly buggers for a mixed bag of rainbow and brown trout. Fishing below Abiquiu was slow.

Cochiti Lake: Fishing was fair to good using crank baits, grubs and jerk baits for white bass. Fishing for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass was slow to fair using jigs, topwater lures, jerk baits, tubes and senkos. Fishing was slow to fair using worms and small jigs for bluegill. A few walleye were caught by anglers using crank baits. We had no reports on other species.

El Vado Lake: Fishing was good using Blue Fox spinners in the dam area for bass. We had no reports on other species.

Fenton Lake: Trout fishing was very slow.

Heron Lake: Fishing was slow for all species. All boat ramps have been closed due to low water conditions. Small boat, canoes and kayaks may still be used. Fishing was slow for all species.

Jackson Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Jemez Waters: Stream flow on the Jemez as of Monday was 9.2 cfs. Fishing on the Rio Cebolla was good using elk hair caddis, San Juan worms, salmon eggs and worms. Fishing on the Rio Las Vacas was good using worms, elk hair caddis, ants and parachute Adams. Fishing on the Jemez and Rio Guadalupe was slow. Fishing on the Valles Caldera was very good for anglers on the San Antonio and the East Fork. They were using small hoppers, ants and beetles. The best reports from the East Fork again this week came from anglers fishing near the headwaters.

Laguna Del Campo: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Lake Farmington: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Navajo Lake: Fishing was fair to good using finesse worms, salt craws, curly tail grubs, jerk baits and crank baits for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. Many of the bass were under-size. Fishing was fair to good using crank baits, jerk baits and buzz baits for northern pike. We had no reports on other species.

San Gregorio: We had no reports from anglers this week.

San Juan River: Water flow below Navajo Dam on Monday was 557 cfs. Trout fishing through the Quality Waters was good using midge clusters, Griffith’s gnats, RS2s, San Juan worms, fluff baetis, parachute Adams and small bead-head pheasant tails. Fishing through the bait waters was fair to good using jerk baits, night crawlers, Power Bait, spinners and wooly buggers.

Santa Cruz Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Seven Springs Brood Pond: Trout fishing was good using Power Bait and salmon eggs.

Tingley Beach: Fishing at the Youth Pond and Central Pond was fair using shrimp, homemade dough bait and hot dogs for catfish. We had no reports on other species. Fishing at the Bob Gerding Catch and Release Pond was slow.

Trout Lakes: Fishing was fair to good using worms, Power Bait, bead-head hare’s ears and spinners for trout.

Southwest

Bear Canyon: Fishing was slow for all species.

Bill Evans Lake: Fishing was slow for all species.

Caballo Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using minnows, stink bait and night crawlers for channel catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Elephant Butte Lake: Fishing was fair to good using crank baits, jerk baits and minnows for white bass. Fishing was fair using jerk baits, tubes, chigger craws and finesse worms for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. Fishing was fair to good using shiners, shrimp, hot dogs, chicken liver and night crawlers for catfish.

A few bluegill were caught by anglers using worms and small jigs. We had no reports on other species. The surface water temp was in the high 70s and low 80s.

Escondida Lake: Fishing was fair using shrimp, hot dogs and night crawlers for catfish. Fishing for all other species was slow.

Gila River: Water flow on the Gila as of this past Monday was 140 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Glenwood Pond: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Lake Roberts: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Percha Dam: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Quemado Lake: Fishing was fair to good using crank baits, jerk baits and silver minnows for tiger musky. Fishing for trout was slow.

Rio Grande: Water flow below Elephant Butte on Monday was .26 cfs. Fishing was slow for all species.

Snow Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Young Pond: Fishing was slow to fair using hot dogs, worms and liver for catfish. We had on reports on other species.

Southeast

Bataan Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Black River: Stream flow at Malaga on Monday was 10 cfs. We had no reports from anglers.

Blue Hole Park Pond: Fishing was slow but there were a few catfish caught by anglers using night crawlers and hot dogs.

Bonito Lake: Closed.

Bosque Redondo: Fishing was slow for all species.

Bottomless Lakes: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Brantley Lake: Anglers are to practice catch-and-release for all fish here as high levels of DDT were found in several fish. Fishing for white bass was good using crank baits, tubes, topwater lures and jerk baits. Anglers fishing for bass also caught a few catfish.

Carlsbad Municipal Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Chaparral Park Lake: Fishing was slow for all species.

El Rito Creek: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Eunice Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Green Meadow Lake: Fishing was good using night crawlers, chicken liver and homemade dough bait for catfish. Fishing for all other species was slow.

Greene Acres Lake: Fishing was fair using hot dogs, liver and night crawlers for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Grindstone Reservoir: Fishing was slow to fair using Kastmasters, Power Bait, worms and salmon eggs for trout. Fishing was slow to fair using worms and spinners for bluegill and small bass. We had no reports on other species.

Jal Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Lake Van: Fishing was slow but there were a few catfish caught by anglers using liver, hot dogs and shrimp.

Oasis Park Lake: Fishing was fair to good using chicken liver and assorted stink baits for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Pecos River: Stream flow below Sumner Lake on Monday was 93 cfs. Fishing was slow for all species.

Perch Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using chicken liver and night crawlers for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Ruidoso River: Stream flow at Ruidoso on Monday was 5.7 cfs. We had no reports from anglers.

Santa Rosa Lake: Fishing was fair using live crawdads and liver for catfish. Fishing was slow to fair using minnows and night crawlers for a mixed bag of crappie and walleye. Fishing was good using cut bait and worms for carp.

Sumner Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
