Fishing report — Aug. 28

This fishing report, provided by Bill Dunn and the Department of Game and Fish, has been generated from the best information available from area officers and anglers. Conditions encountered after the report is compiled may differ, as stream, lake and weather conditions alter fish and angler activities.

Northeast

Charette Lakes: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Cimarron River: Stream flow below Eagle Nest on Monday was 12 cfs. Trout fishing was good using Royal Wullfs, parachute Adams, stimulators, salmon eggs and worms. Fishing at the Gravel Pit Lakes was fair using Pistol Petes and Power Bait.

Clayton Lake: Fishing was good using Power Bait and spinners for trout. Anglers reported best success in the evening hours. We had no reports on other species.

Conchas Lake: Fishing was good using slab spoons, topwater lures and crank baits for white bass. Fishing for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass was slow to fair using crank baits, jerk baits, tubes, grubs and topwater lures. Night fishing for catfish was fair using liver and shrimp over baited holes. We had no reports on other species. The surface water temp was in the mid to upper 70s.

Coyote Creek: Fishing was slow and fishing pressure was light.

Eagle Rock Lake: Trout fishing was good using Power Bait, worms, salmon eggs and spinners.

Eagle Nest Lake: Hot spot for perch: Perch fishing continues to be the hot ticket here as anglers did very well again this past week. Fishing was great from the shore and from anchored boats. The best bait was worms. Fishing was fair using Platte River specials, Panther Martins and Z Rays tipped with Power Bait for rainbow trout and an occasional kokanee. Fishing for northern pike was slow. The 22nd Annual Fish Fest will be Sept. 20-28. For details call (575) 377-6941.

Gallinas River: Trout fishing was fair to good using worms, salmon eggs and bead-head hares’’ ears.

Hopewell Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Lake Alice: Trout fishing was slow.

Lake Maloya: Trout fishing was slow to fair using Power Bait, Pistol Petes, wooly buggers and hares’’ ears. Fishing for small perch was very good using worms and Pistol Petes.

Los Pinos: Trout fishing was good using pheasant tails, San Juan worms, salmon eggs and worms.

Manzano Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Maxwell Lake 13: Fishing was slow for all species.

Monastery Lake: Trout fishing was very good using midges, hares’’ ears, Power Bait and salmon eggs

Morphy Lake: Fishing was slow.

Mt View Ponds: Trout fishing was very good using salmon eggs, Power Bait and worms.

Pecos River: Water flow near the town of Pecos on Monday was 55 cfs. Trout fishing was good using worms, salmon eggs, royal humpys, elk hair caddis, San Juan worms, bead-head hares’’ ears and pheasant tail nymphs. Anglers reported catching large numbers of rainbows and just a few browns. We had no reports on catfish.

Red River: Water flow near the hatchery on Monday was 58 cfs. Fishing was good using poundmeisters, bead-head hares’’ ears, night crawlers and salmon eggs for trout. Fishing at the hatchery pond was good using salmon eggs and Power Bait.

Rio Costilla: Water flow below the dam as of Monday morning was 60 cfs. Trout fishing was good using bead-head hares’’ ears and stimulators.

Rio Grande: Water flow near the Taos Junction Bridge on Monday was 328 cfs. Fishing picked up this past week with improving water conditions. Trout fishing was fair using sculpins, egg-sucking leeches and bead-head wooly buggers.

Rio Hondo: Stream flow near Valdez on Monday was 20 cfs. Fishing was good using royal trudes, royal humpys and hares’ ears for trout.

Rio Mora: Stream flow near Terrero on Monday was 12 cfs. Trout fishing was good using San Juan worms, elk hair caddis and hares’ ears.

Rio Pueblo: Stream flow near Penasco on Monday was 8.7 cfs. Fishing was good using hares’ ears, royal humpys and San Juan worms for trout.

Santa Barbara: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Shuree Ponds: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Springer Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using cut bait and chicken liver for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Storrie Lake: Trout fishing was fair to good using Power Bait, salmon eggs and worms. We had no reports on other species.

Stubblefield Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Ute Lake: Hot spot for white bass: Fishing was described as excellent by anglers fishing for white bass and using slab spoons. A few fish were also taken by anglers trolling crank baits. The white bass were schooled at the mouths of coves and suspended at 15 to 17 feet over 30 feet of water. Fishing was slow to fair using blade baits and slab spoons for walleye. Fishing for all other species was slow. The surface water temp was in the high 70s.

Northwest

Abiquiu Lake: Fishing was good using spinner-night crawler rigs, jig and minnow combinations and curly tail grubs for walleye. Fishing was slow to fair using jerk baits, tubes, crank baits and wooly buggers for smallmouth bass. The best catch reports came from anglers fishing the upper end of the lake. We had no reports on other species.

Animas River: Water flow near Aztec on Monday morning was 295 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Albuquerque Area Drains: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Bluewater Lake: Fishing was fair using jerk baits, large streamers, and topwater lures for tiger musky. One 21-inch trout was reported but no details were provided. We had no reports on other species. Anglers should be aware that it is illegal to use bait fish at this lake.

Brazos River: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Canjilon Lakes: Trout fishing was fair to good using spinners, Pistol Petes, wooly buggers and Power Bait for trout.

Chama River: Monday morning water flows below El Vado and Abiquiu were 400 cfs and 622 cfs respectively. Fishing below El Vado was fair to good using worms, Power Bait and salmon eggs for rainbow trout. A few browns were caught by anglers using Rapalas and Panther Martins. We had no reports from below Abiquiu.

Cochiti Lake: Fishing was fair to good using crank baits, grubs and jerk baits for white bass. Fishing for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass was slow with just a few caught by anglers using topwater lures, jerk baits, tubes and senkos. Fishing was slow to fair using hot dogs, night crawlers and liver for catfish.

El Vado Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Fenton Lake: Trout fishing was very slow.

Heron Lake: Fishing was slow for all species. All boat ramps have been closed due to low water conditions. Small boats, canoes and kayaks may be used.

Jackson Lake: Fishing was slow for all species. Fishing pressure was very light.

Jemez Waters: Stream flow on the Jemez as of Monday was 16 cfs. Fishing on the Rio Cebolla was good using elk hair caddis, hares’ ears, San Juan worms and salmon eggs. Fishing on the Rio Las Vacas was slow to fair using elk hair caddis, ants and parachute Adams. Fishing on the Jemez and Rio Guadalupe was slow. Fishing on the Valles Caldera was very good for anglers on the San Antonio and the East Fork. They did very well using small hopper patterns. The best reports from the East Fork came from anglers fishing near the headwaters.

Laguna Del Campo: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Lake Farmington: Fishing was slow for all species.

Navajo Lake: Fishing was fair to good using buzz baits, finesse worms, jerk baits and crank baits for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. Fishing was good using crank baits, jerk baits and buzz baits for northern pike. We received good reports from both the San Juan and Pine arms of the lake. Fishing was fair trolling Z Rays, Arnies and Panther Martins tipped with corn for kokanee. We had no reports on other species.

San Gregorio: We had no reports from anglers this week.

San Juan River: Water flow below Navajo Dam on Monday was 753 cfs. Trout fishing through the Quality Waters was good using Griffith’s gnats, small parachute RS2s, red larva, San Juan worms, fluff baetis and small bead-head pheasant tails. Fishing through the bait waters was fair to good using jerk baits, night crawlers, Power Bait and wooly buggers.

Santa Cruz Lake: Fishing was fair using Power Bait, spinners and salmon eggs for trout. We had no reports on other species.

Seven Springs Brood Pond: Trout fishing was good using Power Bait, salmon eggs and elk hair caddis.

Tingley Beach: Fishing at the Youth Pond and Central Pond was slow to fair using shrimp, homemade dough bait, hot dogs and liver for catfish. A few bluegills were caught by anglers using worms. Fishing at the Bob Gerding Catch and Release Pond was slow.

Trout Lakes: Fishing was very good using worms, Power Bait, hares’ ears and spinners for trout.

Southwest

Bear Canyon: Fishing was slow for all species.

Bill Evans Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Caballo Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using minnows and night crawlers for channel catfish. White bass fishing was fair to good using crank baits, jerk baits and spinner minnow combinations. We had no reports on other species.

Elephant Butte Lake: Fishing was good using crank baits, grubs and minnows for white bass. Fishing was fair using topwater lures, jerk baits, tubes, chigger craws, swim baits and finesse worms for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. Fishing was good using shiners, shrimp, hot dogs, chicken liver and night crawlers over baited holes for catfish. We had no reports on other species. The surface water temp was in the high 70s.

Escondida Lake: Fishing was slow for all species.

Gila River: Water flow on the Gila as of this past Monday was 63 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Glenwood Pond: Fishing was good using Power Bait for stocked rainbow trout.

Lake Roberts: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Percha Dam: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Quemado Lake: Fishing was slow but there were a few trout caught by anglers using Power Bait. We had no reports on tiger musky.

Rio Grande: Water flow below Elephant Butte on Monday was .70 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Snow Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Young Pond: Fishing was slow for all species.

Southeast

Bataan Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Black River: Stream flow at Malaga on Monday was .6 cfs. We had no reports from anglers.

Blue Hole Park Pond: Fishing was slow for all species.

Bonito Lake: Closed.

Bosque Redondo: Fishing was slow for all species.

Bottomless Lakes: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Brantley Lake: Anglers are to practice catch-and-release for all fish here as high levels of DDT were found in several fish. Fishing for white bass was very good this past week. Anglers were using crank baits, tubes, jigs and jerk baits. Anglers fishing for bass also caught a few catfish. The best reports came from anglers fishing in the Seven Rivers area.

Carlsbad Municipal Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Chaparral Park Lake: Fishing was slow for all species.

El Rito Creek: Trout fishing was fair using Power Bait and worms.

Eunice Lake: Fishing was slow for all species.

Green Meadow Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Greene Acres Lake: Fishing was slow for all species.

Grindstone Reservoir: Fishing was good using Kastmasters, Panther Martins, Power Bait, worms and salmon eggs for trout. Fishing was slow to fair using worms for catfish, bluegill and small bass.

Jal Lake: Fishing was slow for all species.

Lake Van: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Oasis Park Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Pecos River: Stream flow below Sumner Lake on Monday was 93 cfs. Fishing was slow to fair using night crawlers and liver for catfish.

Perch Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Ruidoso River: Stream flow at Ruidoso on Monday was 12 cfs. We had no reports from anglers.

Santa Rosa Lake: Fishing was fair using live crawdads, cut bait, small jigs and minnows for a mixed bag of crappie, walleye, smallmouth bass and catfish. Fishing was good using cut bait and worms for carp.

Sumner Lake: Fishing was slow for all species. Fishing pressure was light.
