High dive shows join Curry County Fair

Staff report

New visitors to the Curry County Fair, the Flying Fools are set to entertain with high dive shows starting at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Curry County Events Center entertainment slab.

With the motto “cowboy boots and hometown roots,” the fair begins at 8 a.m. Tuesday with an open horse show at the Mounted Patrol Arena. A carnival will open at 5 p.m. that day. The fair concludes Saturday night.

The Flying Fools, an acrobatic team based in Canada, will do a series of dives, some through hoops of fire, said Curry County Events Center General Manager Kevin Jolley.

Other fair entertainment will include music concerts with the cost to enter these covered by the fair entry fee; a bubble tower, stilt walkers, and more than 30 carnival rides, Jolley said.

Although all livestock entries had an Aug. 1 deadline to enter, Jolley said there’s still time to enter the home arts show with a homemade good or work of art. Open to children and adults, the home arts show will feature items such as baked goods, pickles and relishes, jams and butters, photography, dried goods, and paintings, to name a few examples.

A flower show will also take place during the fair, with entries being accepted during the same time as entries for the home arts show. The flower show will allow for horticulture specimens as well as flower arrangements.

The 15th annual Turtle Race will require participants to catch their own turtle to enter it into the race, Jolley said.

“No pet turtles allowed,” Jolley said. Turtles must be released following the race.

Those interested in participating must pre-register for the event; no entries will be taken the day of the race.

Cash prizes for the Turtle Race are:

• First place, $300

• Second place, $200

• Third place, $125

• Fourth place, $75

The second annual Curry County Fair pet costume contest will also take place Tuesday. Presented by the Clovis/Portales Kennel Club, the contest will allow fairgoers the opportunity to show off their pet, as well as a creative costume.

Animal-geared events as well as a chance to share one’s homemaking savvy are the main points of the fair, Jolley said.

“Our fair is an agriculture fair,” he said. “That’s what our fair is all about.”
