Fishing report — July 3

This fishing report, provided by Bill Dunn and the Department of Game and Fish, has been generated from the best information available from area officers and anglers. Conditions encountered after the report is compiled may differ, as stream, lake and weather conditions alter fish and angler activities.

Northeast

Charette Lakes: Fishing was fair to good using salmon peach Power Bait and worms for trout.

Cimarron River: Stream flow below Eagle Nest on Monday was 15 cfs. Trout fishing was very good using elk hair caddis, yellow sallies, brassies, worms, spinners and salmon eggs. Fishing at the Gravel Pit Lakes was good using Power Bait, spinners and elk hair caddis.

Clayton Lake: Fishing was good using green or yellow Power Bait for limits of trout. We had no reports on other species.

Conchas Lake: Fishing was fair to good using crank baits, topwater lures, tubes and jerk baits for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. Fishing was fair using crank baits, spinner-night crawler combinations and leeches for walleye. Fishing was fair to good using crank baits for white bass. Fishing was fair using stink bait and night crawlers for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Coyote Creek: Trout fishing was good using salmon eggs, worms and elk hair caddis.

Eagle Rock Lake: Trout fishing was good using small worms, salmon eggs, Pistol Petes and spinners.

Eagle Nest Lake: Fishing from boats was fair trolling Arnies and Platte River specials for kokanee and rainbow trout. Angers fishing from the bank and from anchored boats did well using Power Bait for trout and worms for perch. Bank fishing was slow to fair using Power Bait, night crawlers and spinners for trout. We had no reports on northern pike.

Hopewell Lake: Trout fishing was fair using Power Bait, Fisher Chick spinners and salmon eggs.

Lake Alice: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Lake Maloya: Fishing in the morning and evening hours has been very good using salmon peach Power Bait, Pistol Petes, small spoons and a variety of flies for trout up to 23 inches in length.

Los Pinos: Fishing was good using bead-head hares ears, leech patterns, worms and San Juan worms for a mixed bag of browns and rainbows.

Manzano Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Maxwell Lake 13: We had no reports from anglers this week

Monastery Lake: Fishing was fair using Power Bait, worms and Pistol Petes for trout.

Morphy Lake: Trout fishing was fair to good using Power Bait, assorted spinners, Pistol Petes, BWOs, hoppers and worms. The boat ramp remains closed due to low water conditions.

Pecos River: Water flow near the town of Pecos on Monday was 58 cfs. Trout fishing was good using stone flies, bead-head prince nymphs, San Juan worms and night crawlers.

Red River: Water flow near the hatchery on Monday was 103 cfs and the water was clearing. Fishing near the hatchery was fair drifting night crawlers and salmon eggs for trout. A few were also caught by anglers using bead-head hares ears. Fishing at the hatchery pond was good using Power Bait and night crawlers.

Rio Costilla: Water flow below the dam as of Monday morning was 48 cfs. Trout fishing was good using hoppers and black ants.

Rio Grande: Water flow near the Taos Junction Bridge on Monday was 610 cfs. Fishing was slow to fair using wooly buggers, bead-head hares ears and night crawlers for trout. We had no reports on other species.

Rio Hondo: Stream flow near Valdez on Monday was 39 cfs. Fishing was slow.

Rio Mora: Stream flow near Terrero on Monday was 8.1 cfs. Trout fishing was fair to good using night crawlers.

Rio Pueblo: Stream flow near Penasco on Monday was 6.5 cfs. Donnie Valdez reported great fly fishing here this past week. He was using elk hair caddis, dark colored nymphs, BWOs and stimulators. He also reported a nice stonefly hatch.

Santa Barbara: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Shuree Ponds: Opens today.

Springer Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Storrie Lake: Fishing was good using night crawlers and Power Bait for rainbow trout. Fishing was fair using night crawlers for catfish.

Ute Lake: Fishing was good jigging live leeches in 12 to 15 feet of water. Anglers also reported success using deep diving crank baits. Fishing was fair to good using topwater lures early and late in the day and four-inch worms during the day for largemouth bass. Fishing was good using night crawlers and small jigs for bluegill. Fishing for crappie was slow but there was some good action reported by anglers fishing under lights and using minnows. Fishing was fair to good using crank baits in the daytime and minnows at night for white bass. Fishing for catfish was slow. The surface water temp was in the mid 70s.

Northwest

Abiquiu Lake: Fishing was fair to good using spinner-night crawler rigs, tubes, jigs and crank baits for walleye. Fishing was good using tubes, senkos, jerk baits and topwater lures for smallmouth bass. Fishing was slow to fair using night crawlers and liver for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Animas River: Water flow near Aztec on Monday morning was 940 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Albuquerque Area Drains: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Bluewater Lake: Fishing for tiger musky was slow to fair using large streamers, in-line spinners and hot dogs. Fishing for all other species was slow. Anglers should be aware that it is illegal to use bait fish at this lake.

Brazos River: Trout fishing was good using hoppers, beetles, salmon eggs and worms.

Canjilon Lakes: Fishing was fair using Power Bait, salmon eggs, Pistol Petes and spinners for trout.

Chama River: Monday morning water flows below El Vado and Abiquiu were 190 cfs and 739 cfs respectively. Fishing below El Vado was good using Rapalas, night crawlers, hoppers and small emergers for a mix of brown, cutthroat and rainbow trout. Fishing below Abiquiu was slow.

Cochiti Lake: Fishing was fair using spinners, jerk baits and crank baits for a mixed bag of northern pike, white bass and smallmouth bass. Fishing was fair using night crawlers and liver for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

El Vado Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Fenton Lake: Fishing was fair using Pistol Petes, worms, salmon eggs and Power Bait for trout.

Heron Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Jackson Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Jemez Waters: Stream flow on the Jemez as of Monday was 3.6 cfs.

We had no reports from anglers this week.

Laguna Del Campo: Fishing was fair to good using Power Bait, salmon eggs, spinners and Pistol Petes for rainbow trout.

Lake Farmington: Fishing was fair to good using Power Bait for trout. We had no reports on other species.

Navajo Lake: Fishing was fair using tubes, senkos, small plastic worms and topwater lures for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. We had no reports on other species. The surface water temp was in the mid to upper 60s.

San Gregorio: We had no reports from anglers this week.

San Juan River: Water flow below Navajo Dam on Monday was 357 cfs.Trout fishing through the Quality Waters was good using red and orange larvae, beetles, ants, hoppers and San Juan worms. BWOs have worked well for some in the afternoon hours. Fishing through the bait waters was good using salmon eggs, worms, hoppers, ants, copper John Barrs and pins minnows.

Santa Cruz Lake: Fishing was fair using Power Bait and worms for trout.

Seven Springs Brood Pond: Fishing was very good using salmon eggs, hoppers, Power Bait and Pistol Petes for rainbow trout.

Tingley Beach: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Southwest

Bear Canyon: Fishing was good using night crawlers and beef liver in the late evening hours for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Bill Evans Lake: Fishing was slow for all species.

Caballo Lake: Fishing was slow for all species.

Elephant Butte Lake: Fishing was fair to good using tubes, chatter baits, jerk baits and topwater lures for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass. Fishing was fair using worms, small grubs and tubes for bluegill. Fishing was fair using night crawlers and liver for catfish. Fishing was fair using crank baits for white bass. We had no reports on other species. The Marina Del Sur, Rock Canyon and Dam Site marinas are open. The surface temp was in the mid to upper 70s.

Escondida Lake: Fishing was slow for all species.

Gila River: Water flow on the Gila as of this past Monday was 20 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Glenwood Pond: Trout fishing was good using Power Bait.

Lake Roberts: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Percha Dam: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Quemado Lake: Fishing was fair using Pistol Petes, spinners, Power Bait and worms for trout. Pancho Lopez of Albuquerque had a good day here last weekend. He caught several trout including one that measured 17.5 inches. He was using a spinner. We had no reports on tiger musky.

Rio Grande: Water flow below Elephant Butte on Monday was 2,350 cfs. Fishing was good using night crawlers and liver for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Snow Lake: Trout fishing was fair to good using hoppers, salmon eggs and Power Bait.

Young Pond: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Southeast

Bataan Lake: Fishing was slow for all species.

Black River: Stream flow at Malaga on Monday was 2.7 cfs. We had no reports from anglers.

Blue Hole Park Pond: Fishing was slow to fair using night crawlers, chicken liver and homemade dough bait for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Bonito Lake: Closed.

Bosque Redondo: Fishing was slow for all species.

Bottomless Lakes: The main entrance to the park has reopened. We had no reports from anglers.

Brantley Lake: Anglers are to practice catch-and-release for all fish here as high levels of DDT were found in several fish. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Carlsbad Municipal Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Chaparral Park Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

El Rito Creek: Fishing was slow to fair using worms and Power Bait for trout.

Eunice Lake: Fishing was slow for all species.

Green Meadow Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Greene Acres Lake: Fishing was slow for all species.

Grindstone Reservoir: Fishing was good using worms, Pistol Petes and salmon peach Power Bait for trout. Fishing was fair to good using night crawlers for bluegill, catfish and small smallmouth bass.

Jal Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Lake Van: Fishing was slow for all species.

Oasis Park Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Pecos River: Stream flow below Sumner Lake on Monday was 1,440 cfs. Access to the area below Sumner Lake has been closed during the high flows. Fishing further downstream was good using night crawlers for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Perch Lake: Fishing was slow for all species.

Ruidoso River: Stream flow at Hollywood on Monday was 4.0 cfs. Fishing was slow.

Santa Rosa Lake: Fishing was fair using chicken liver and night crawlers for catfish. We had no reports on other species. The ongoing water release is expected to run through July 2. The lake level is expected to drop about 10 feet during that time.

Sumner Lake: Fishing was slow for all species.
