Fishing report — June 26

This fishing report, provided by Bill Dunn and the Department of Game and Fish, has been generated from the best information available from area officers and anglers. Conditions encountered after the report is compiled may differ, as stream, lake and weather conditions alter fish and angler activities.

Northeast

Charette Lakes: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Cimarron River: Stream flow below Eagle Nest on Monday was 7.8 cfs. Trout fishing was good using stone flies, yellow sallies, brassies and salmon eggs. Fishing at the Gravel Pit Lakes was fair using Power Bait and Pistol Petes.

Clayton Lake: Fishing was good using green or yellow Power Bait for limits of trout. We had no reports on other species.

Conchas Lake: Fishing was good using senkos, crank baits, topwater lures and jerk baits for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. Fishing was fair using curly tail grubs, crank baits spinner-minnow combinations and spinner-night crawler combinations for walleye. Fishing was fair to good using crank baits for white bass. Fishing was fair to good using stink bait and night crawlers for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Coyote Creek: Trout fishing was fair to good using salmon eggs.

Eagle Rock Lake: Trout fishing was good using small worms, salmon eggs, Pistol Petes and spinners.

Eagle Nest Lake: Fishing was good trolling Arnies, Platte River specials, Fisher Chick spinners and Panther Martins for kokanee and rainbow trout. Anglers fishing from the bank caught trout while using Power Bait. Fishing was good using worms for perch from the bank and from anchored boats. Fishing was slow to fair using spoons and crank baits for northern pike.

Hopewell Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Lake Alice: Fishing was slow and fishing pressure was very light.

Lake Maloya: Trout fishing was fair to good using rainbow Power Bait, homemade dough bait, salmon eggs, worms, Pistol Petes, Panther Martins and Mepps spinners.

Los Pinos: Fishing was very good using bead-head hares ears, mayfly emergers, worms and small spinners for a mixed bag of browns and rainbows.

Manzano Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Maxwell Lake 13: Trout fishing was good using Power Bait, garlic cheese, spinners and worms for fish up to 20 inches. We had no reports on other species.

Monastery Lake: Fishing was fair using Power Bait, worms and Pistol Petes for trout.

Morphy Lake: Trout fishing was fair to good using Power Bait, salmon eggs, assorted spinners, Pistol Petes, BWOs and worms. The boat ramp remains closed due to low water conditions.

Pecos River: Water flow near the town of Pecos on Monday was 80 cfs. Trout fishing was good using stone flies, bead-head prince nymphs, San Juan worms and night crawlers.

Red River: Water flow near the hatchery on Monday was 119 cfs. Fishing was slow.

Rio Costilla: Trout fishing was good using hoppers, San Juan worms and black ants.

Rio Grande: Water flow near the Taos Junction Bridge on Monday was 656 cfs. Fishing was slow for all species.

Rio Hondo: Stream flow near Valdez on Monday was 52 cfs. Fishing was slow.

Rio Mora: Stream flow near Terrero on Monday was 13 cfs. Trout fishing was fair to good using night crawlers.

Rio Pueblo: Stream flow near Penasco on Monday was 18 cfs. Fishing was good using San Juan worms, bead-head hares ears and royal humpys.

Santa Barbara: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Shuree Ponds: Opens for the season July 1.

Springer Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Storrie Lake: Trout fishing was sporadic at best this past week. A few fish were caught by anglers using salmon eggs and Power Bait. Fishing for catfish was slow.

Ute Lake: Fishing was fair to good using spinner-night crawler and spinner-leech rigs for walleye. They were a little deeper than the previous week and most were found in about 15 feet of water. Fishing was very good using worms, minnows and small grubs for bluegill. Fishing for crappie was slow. Fishing was good trolling and casting crank baits for white bass. Fishing was good using crank baits, jerk baits and buzz baits for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. Fishing for catfish was described by anglers as being very sporadic. Some did well using chicken liver and stink bait while others couldn’t get a bite. The surface water temp was in the low to mid 70s.

Northwest

Abiquiu Lake: Fishing was good using spinner-night crawler rigs, tubes and crank baits for walleye. Fishing was fair to good using tubes, crank baits, jerk baits and topwater lures for smallmouth bass. We had no reports on other species.

Animas River: Water flow near Aztec on Monday morning was 1,290 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Albuquerque Area Drains: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Bluewater Lake: Fishing for catfish slowed from last week but anglers managed to catch a few while using hot dogs and stink bait. Fishing was fair using jerk baits, large custom flies and in-line spinners for tiger musky. Fishing for trout was slow. Anglers should be aware that it is illegal to use bait fish – alive or dead -- at this lake.

Brazos River: Trout fishing was good using hoppers and worms.

Canjilon Lakes: Fishing was fair to good using Power Bait, salmon eggs and spinners for trout.

Chama River: Monday morning water flows below El Vado and Abiquiu were 151 cfs and 656 cfs respectively. Fishing below El Vado was good using Rapalas, night crawlers and small emergers for a mix of brown, cutthroat and rainbow trout. Fishing below Abiquiu was slow.

Cochiti Lake: Fishing was fair using spinners, jerk baits and crank baits for a mixed bag of northern pike, white bass and smallmouth bass. Fishing was fair using night crawlers and liver for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

El Vado Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Fenton Lake: Fishing was fair to good using Pistol Petes, wooly buggers, worms, salmon eggs and Power Bait for trout.

Heron Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Jackson Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Jemez Waters: Stream flow on the Jemez as of Monday was 4.2 cfs.

Fishing on the Cebolla was fair using worms, salmon eggs and ants. We had no reports on the Jemez, Rio Las Vacas and Rio Guadalupe. Fishing on the Valles Caldera was very good using black ants, hoppers and elk hair caddis. The best reports from the East Fork were from anglers fishing up close to the headwaters. Laguna Del Campo: Fishing was fair using Power Bait, salmon eggs, spinners and Pistol Petes for rainbow trout.

Lake Farmington: Fishing was good using corn for carp. Ty Estavez reported good luck catching two carp that were over six pounds. He also caught rainbow trout while using Power Bait. We had reports on other species.

Navajo Lake: Fishing was fair to good using tubes, creature baits, jerk baits and spinner baits for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. A few northern pike were caught by anglers using jerk baits. Fishing was fair to good trolling the mouth of Francis Canyon and near the dam with Arnies and Panther Martins tipped with corn at 30 to 35 feet for kokanee. We had no reports on other species.

San Gregorio: Trout fishing was slow.

San Juan: Water flow below Navajo on Monday was 293 cfs and expected to be around 350 cfs by end of day. Trout fishing through the Quality Waters was good using BWOs, foam wing emergers, red larvae, small bead-head pheasant tails, San Juan worms and Crystal Flash. Fishing through the bait waters was good using salmon eggs, worms, foam wing emergers, wooly buggers, copper John Barrs and small Yozuri pins minnows.

Santa Cruz Lake: Trout fishing was fair to good using Power Bait, spinners, Pistol Petes, salmon eggs and worms.

Seven Springs Brood Pond: Fishing was very good using worms, salmon eggs, Power Bait and Pistol Petes for rainbow trout.

Tingley Beach: Fishing at the Youth and Central Ponds was good using hot dogs, liver, homemade dough bait and night crawlers for catfish. A few largemouth bass and bluegill were caught by anglers using worms. Fishing at the Catch and Release Pond was slow with just a few trout caught by anglers using an assortment of flies.

Southwest

Bear Canyon: Fishing was good using liver, night crawlers and stink bait for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Bill Evans Lake: Fishing was slow for all species.

Caballo Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using minnows for white bass, walleye and an occasional crappie. We had no reports on other species.

Elephant Butte Lake: Fishing was fair using tubes, senkos, creature baits and topwater lures for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass. Fishing was fair to good using worms, small grubs and tubes for bluegill. Fishing was fair to good using night crawlers and stink bait for catfish. Fishing was fair using crank baits for white bass and an occasional walleye. We had no reports on other species. The Marina Del Sur, Rock Canyon and Dam Site marinas are open. The surface temp was in the mid to upper 70s.

Escondida Lake: Fishing was slow for all species.

Gila River: Water flow on the Gila as of this past Monday was 24 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Glenwood Pond: Trout fishing was good using Power Bait.

Lake Roberts: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Percha Dam: Fishing was slow for all species.

Quemado Lake: Fishing was fair using Pistol Petes, salmon eggs, Power Bait and worms for trout. We had no reports on tiger musky.

Rio Grande: Water flow below Elephant Butte on Monday was 2,330 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Snow Lake: Trout fishing was fair to good using hoppers, salmon eggs and Power Bait.

Young Pond: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Southeast

Bataan Lake: Fishing was slow for all species.

Black River: Stream flow at Malaga on Monday was 3.8 cfs. We had no reports from anglers.

Blue Hole Park Pond: Fishing was slow to fair using night crawlers, chicken liver and homemade dough bait for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Bonito Lake: Closed.

Bosque Redondo: Fishing was slow to fair using liver for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Bottomless Lakes: The main entrance to the park has reopened. We had no reports from anglers.

Brantley Lake: Anglers are to practice catch-and-release for all fish here as high levels of DDT were found in several fish. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Carlsbad Municipal Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Chaparral Park Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

El Rito Creek: Fishing was slow to fair using worms and Power Bait for trout.

Eunice Lake: Fishing was slow for all species.

Green Meadow Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Greene Acres Lake: Fishing was slow for all species.

Grindstone Reservoir: Fishing was fair to good using worms, Pistol Petes and salmon peach Power Bait for trout. We had no reports on other species.

Jal Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Lake Van: Fishing was slow for all species.

Oasis Park Lake: Fishing for catfish was good using homemade dough bait and stink bait. We had no reports on other species.

Pecos River: Stream flow below Sumner Lake on Monday was 93 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Perch Lake: Fishing was slow for all species.

Ruidoso River: Stream flow at Hollywood on Monday was 3.2 cfs. Fishing was slow.

Santa Rosa Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using chicken liver, dough bait and night crawlers for catfish. We had no reports on other species. A water release began on Monday and will run through July 2. The lake level is expected to drop about 10 feet during that time.

Sumner Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using crank baits for smallmouth bass and white bass. Fishing was fair using liver and night crawlers for catfish. We had no reports on other species. A water release is expected to begin today and last for about 10 days.
