Furr's closes its doors

The Clovis Furr’s Cafeteria has posted a notice on its door notifying the public that its doors are closed for good after 44 years of service.

“We most sincerely appreciate your patronage and the many friendships developed over the years,” the sign read.

Furr's Cafeteria and Pie Kitchen opened March 12, 1970, in the same location where it closed over the weekend, 200 W. 22nd in Hilltop Plaza Shopping Center, according to CNJ files.

Furr’s Cafeteria closed its doors over the weekend after 44 years of service.

It initially offered "10 to 12 kinds of meals, 20 to 25 varieties of salads, 20 different vegetables, hot breads and desserts," the Clovis News-Journal reported.

Owners and operators of the Clovis location were unable to be reached for comment on Monday.

The reason for the closure of the Clovis location is unknown, but Furr’s Plano-based parent company, Buffet Partners LP, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in early February. The company stated in its filing that “Furr’s has weathered the macroeconomic storm that began in 2008, but the credit constraints resulting from the financial crisis impacted the company’s ability to finance growth and improvements in process, and subjected the debtors to higher interest and leasing rates,” The Dallas Morning News reported in February.

Jill Gouge-Laird, director of marketing at Buffet Partners, said in February, the company would not be closing any restaurants as part of the restructuring.

The Dallas Morning News also reported that before the bankruptcy, Furr’s closed six locations.

As of February, the chain still had 29 locations open, including 12 in a newer format called “Furr’s Fresh Buffet."

According to the Furr’s website, locations are still open in Amarillo, Plainview and Hobbs.
