N.M. Fishing Report — June 5

This fishing report, provided by Bill Dunn and the Department of Game and Fish, has been generated from the best information available from area officers and anglers. Conditions encountered after the report is compiled may differ, as stream, lake and weather conditions alter fish and angler activities.

Northeast

Charette Lakes: Trout fishing was sporadic at best this past week. A few good size trout were caught by anglers using Power Bait. We had no report on perch. Cimarron River: Stream flow below Eagle Nest on Monday was 5.9 cfs. Trout fishing was good using stone flies, brassies, Cimarron specials and salmon eggs. Fishing at the Gravel Pit Lakes was fair using Pistol Petes, Power Bait and salmon eggs. Clayton Lake: Fishing was good using garlic bait and Power Bait for rainbow trout. Fishing was fair using worms for bullheads. We had no reports on other species. Conchas Lake: Fishing was good using grubs, minnows and crank baits for walleye and white bass. Fishing was good using senkos, tubes and jerk baits for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. Fishing was fair to good using minnows and grubs for crappie. Fishing was good using liver, dough bait and night crawlers for catfish. We had no reports on other species. Coyote Creek: Trout fishing was very good again this past week. Anglers did well using, worms, salmon eggs, elk hair caddis and copper John Barrs. Eagle Rock Lake: Fishing was good using salmon eggs, Power Bait and Kastmasters for trout. Eagle Nest Lake: Fishing was fair to good trolling Arnies, Panther Martins and Super Dupers for a mixed bag of kokanee and rainbow trout. A few trout were also caught by anglers fishing from the bank and using Power Bait. Fishing was fair using worms for perch. Fishing for pike was slow but there were a few caught by anglers using large spoons and jerk baits. The main boat ramp is open and the boat docks are in place. Hopewell Lake: Trout fishing was good for anglers using worms, Power Bait, damsel flies and dark colored wooly buggers. Lake Alice: Trout fishing was very good using Power Bait, homemade dough bait and Pistol Petes. Lake Maloya: Trout fishing was very good using salmon peach and garlic Power Bait, Pistol Petes, Kastmasters, damsel flies, wooly buggers, and parachute Adams. Fishing was fair using worms for small perch. Sugarite Canyon State Park will have its annual Fishing Derby here June 6, 7 and 8. For more information, contact the state park office at (575) 445-5607. Los Pinos: We had no reports from anglers this week. Manzano Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using Power Bait for trout. Maxwell Lake 13: Trout fishing was good using Power Bait, garlic cheese, wooly buggers, salmon eggs and worms. We had no reports on other species. Monastery Lake: Fishing was fair to good using Power Bait, salmon eggs, worms and black and olive Pistol Petes for trout. Morphy Lake: Trout fishing was very good using Power Bait, salmon eggs, wooly buggers, Kastmasters, Super Dupers, Pistol Petes and parachute adams. The boat ramp remains closed due to low water conditions. Pecos River: Water flow near the town of Pecos on Monday was 198 cfs. Trout fishing was fair using worms. Red River: Water flow near the hatchery Monday was 245 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week. Rio Costilla: We had no reports from anglers this week. Rio Grande: Water flow near the Taos Junction Bridge on Monday was 1,490 cfs. Fishing was slow for all species. Rio Hondo: Stream flow near Valdez on Monday was 118 cfs. Fishing was slow. Rio Mora: Stream flow near Terrero on Monday was 75 cfs. Trout fishing was fair using night crawlers and spinners. Rio Pueblo: Stream flow near Penasco on Monday was 95 cfs. Fishing was slow. Santa Barbara: We had no reports from anglers this week. Shuree Ponds: Closed for the season. Opens July 1. Springer Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using chicken liver, Rat L Traps, spoons and spinner baits for northern pike. We had no reports on other species. Storrie Lake: Fishing was very good using salmon peach Power Bait for trout. Fishing for catfish was slow. Ute Lake: Fishing was very good using white grubs, jerk baits, crank baits and minnows in shallow water for walleye. A few good size fish were also caught by anglers trolling shad raps and white Bombers. Fishing was good using minnows and grubs for crappie. Fishing was good trolling Bombers and Flicker Shad for white bass. Fishing was good using jigs, tubes, senkos, chigger craws and jerk baits for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass. Fishing was good using liver, stink bait, night crawlers and dough bait for catfish.

Northwest

Abiquiu Lake: Fishing was very good using senkos, grubs, jerk baits and crank baits for smallmouth bass. Fishing was good using spinner-night crawler combinations, curly tail grubs and crank baits for walleye. Fishing from the bank was slow. Animas River: Water flow near Aztec on Monday morning was 3,950 cfs.We had no reports from anglers this week. Albuquerque Area Drains: Fishing on the Bernalillo Drain was fair using worms for bass and a few trout. We had no reports from the other drains. Bluewater Lake: Fishing was good using crank baits, spoons and jerk baits for tiger musky. Fishing was good using Power Bait, worms and salmon eggs for trout. We had no reports on other species.Anglers should be aware that it is illegal to use bait fish at this lake. Brazos River: Trout fishing was very good using worms. Canjilon Lakes: Fishing was very good using Power Bait, Pistol Petes and spinners for trout. Chama River: Monday morning water flows below El Vado and Abiquiu were 186 cfs and 302 cfs respectively. Fishing below El Vado was good using Rapalas, night crawlers and Power Bait for a mix of brown and rainbow trout. Fishing below Abiquiu was fair to good using spinners for small rainbows. Cochiti Lake: Fishing was fair using senkos, tubes, jigs and jerk baits for smallmouth bass and an occasional largemouth bass. Fishing was very good using worms for bluegill and yellow perch. Larry Adkins of Albuquerque caught several of both and said the key was to find a sunken tree on the east side of the lake and put your bait in next to it and get a bite every time. He was using worms under a float. Fishing was slow to fair using night crawlers, dough bait and shrimp for catfish. We had no reports on other species. El Vado Lake: We had no reports from anglers. Fenton Lake: Fishing was very good using dark colored Pistol Petes and wooly buggers, Power Bait, worms, homemade dough bait and salmon eggs. Work is underway to improve roadways and parking in the main area of the park and is expected to be complete in early June. Heron Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using roe sacs, salmon eggs, spinners and Power Bait in the Ridge Rock area for rainbow trout. A few kokanee were caught by anglers trolling Panther Martins and Z Rays. Fishing was slow to fair using jigs tipped with cut bait in 35 to 40 feet for lake trout. Four wheel drive was still recommended for launching at the primitive ramp. Jackson Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week. Jemez Waters: Stream flow on the Jemez as of Monday was 17 cfs and fishing was reported as good. Anglers did well using hoppers, ants, salmon eggs and worms. Fishing on the Cebolla was good using worms, hoppers and salmon eggs. We had no reports on the Rio Guadalupe. Fishing on the Valles Caldera was good on both the East Fork and San Antonio. Anglers did well using foam hoppers on the San Antonio and black ants and Griffith gnats on the East Fork. Big fish reported was a 16-inch brown caught and released by Jason Paulk, a music professor at Eastern New Mexico. He was using a hand-tied Griffiths gnat. For additional information on the Valles Caldera, call (866) 382-5537. Laguna Del Campo: Fishing was good using Power Bait, salmon eggs, spinners and Pistol Petes for rainbow trout. Lake Farmington: We had no reports from anglers this week. Navajo Lake: Fishing was good using tubes, worms, senkos, jerk baits, crank baits and jigs for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. Fishing was fair using jerk baits, crank baits and spinners for northern pike. Fishing for crappie was slow but there were a few caught by anglers using small tubes and minnows. Fishing was slow to fair trolling spinners tipped with corn at 30 to 35 feet for kokanee. We had no reports on other species. San Gregorio: We received our first angler report from here and unfortunately it was not good. Fishing was slow and the trash was terrible. Please practice “Carry In, Carry Out” wherever you fish. It makes the fishing experience more pleasant even when the bite is off. San Juan River: Water flow below Navajo Dam on Monday was 302 cfs. Trout fishing through the Quality Waters was good using small midge patterns red larva, black ants, hoppers and beetles. Fishing through the bait waters was good using small jerk baits, salmon eggs, night crawlers, copper John Barrs and Chernobyl ants. Water clarity has greatly improved. Santa Cruz Lake: Trout fishing was very good using Power Bait, Kastmasters, spinners, Rapalas, salmon eggs and worms. Anglers fishing from boats did better than those fishing from the bank. Seven Springs Brood Pond: Fishing was very good using a variety of baits and flies. June 1, Elijah and Zachary Martinez of Santa Fe caught their limits of trout. They were using salmon eggs and parachute Adams. Tingley Beach: Fishing at the Youth and Central Ponds was good using night crawlers, garlic cheese and homemade dough bait for channel catfish and an occasional trout. Fishing for all other species was slow. We had no reports from the Catch and Release Pond.

Southwest

Bear Canyon: Fishing at night was very good using worms, liver and stink bait for catfish. We had no reports on other species. Bill Evans Lake: Fishing was slow for all species. Caballo Lake: A water release has begun and fishing was slow for all species. Elephant Butte Lake: Fishing was fair to good using crank baits, jerk baits and grubs for white bass. Fishing was fair using tubes, senkos, spinner baits and jerk baits for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass. A few bass were also caught by anglers using topwater lures. Fishing was slow to fair using tubes, minnows and small jigs for crappie. Fishing was good using stink bait, shrimp and night crawlers for catfish. We had no reports on other species. The Marina Del Sur, Rock Canyon and Dam Site marinas are open. The surface temp was in the mid-60s. Escondida Lake: Fishing was fair using worms, liver and hot dogs for catfish. We had no reports on other species. Gila River: Water flow on the Gila as of this past Monday was 43 cfs. We had no reports from anglers. Glenwood Pond: Fishing was fair to good using Power Bait for trout. Lake Roberts: Though the lake is currently closed to boating while a construction project is in progress, bank fishing has been reported as good for catfish and trout. Fish the deeper pockets for the trout. Best baits have been chicken liver, garlic cheese and Power Bait. Percha Dam: We had no reports from anglers this week. Quemado Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week. Rio Grande: Water flow below Elephant Butte on Monday was 2,240 cfs. Fishing was fair using night crawlers for catfish. We had no reports on other species. Snow Lake: Fishing was fair to good using spinners, worms under a bobber and Power Bait for trout. Jennifer and Tim Frey caught several trout here on the 28th. They were using worms under a bobber. Young Pond: Fishing was fair using night crawlers, dough bait and liver for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Southeast

Bataan Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week. Black River: Stream flow at Malaga on Monday was 3.6 cfs. We had no reports from anglers. Blue Hole Park Pond: Fishing was good using worms and night crawlers for catfish. Fishing for trout was slow but there were a few caught by anglers using spinners. Bonito Lake: Closed. Bosque Redondo: Fishing was slow to fair using night crawlers and liver for catfish. We had no reports on other species. Bottomless Lakes: The main entrance to the park has reopened. We had no reports from anglers. Brantley Lake: Anglers are to practice catch-and-release for all fish here as high levels of DDT were found in several fish. We had no reports from anglers this week. The Seven Rivers Day Use area has reopened along with the boat ramp and shoreline access. Carlsbad Municipal Lake: The water level has been lowered for shoreline and dock work. We have not heard if the project is complete but will attempt to find out and let you know next week. Chaparral Park Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week. El Rito Creek: Fishing was fair using worms and Power Bait for trout. We had no reports on other species. Eunice Lake: Fishing was fair using night crawlers for catfish. Green Meadow Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using worms and liver for catfish. We had no reports on other species. Greene Acres Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week. Grindstone Reservoir: Trout fishing was good using Power Bait, worms, salmon eggs, spinners and Pistol Petes. Fishing was slow to fair using worms for bluegill. We had no reports on other species. Jal Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using homemade dough bait, night crawlers and liver for catfish. Fishing for all other species was slow. Lake Van: Fishing was fair using liver, dough bait, night crawlers and shrimp for channel catfish. A few trout were caught by anglers using night crawlers and worms. We had no reports on other species. Oasis Park Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week. Pecos River: Stream flow below Sumner Lake on Monday was 70 cfs. Fishing was slow to fair using night crawlers and spinners for smallmouth bass. We had no reports on other species. Perch Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using worms for catfish. We had no reports on other species. Ruidoso River: Stream flow at Hollywood on Monday was 2.6 cfs. Trout fishing was fair using salmon eggs. Santa Rosa Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using chicken liver and night crawlers for catfish. Fishing for all other species was slow. A youth fishing clinic will be held here June 14.
