Rams drop pair to Bobcats

Staff report

RIO RANCHO — It was a long day for the Portales High baseball team on Saturday.

Playing on a neutral field at Cleveland High School, the Rams absorbed 7-3 and 19-7 losses at the hands of Bloomfield, which scored in every inning except one in the twin bill. The second game was called after five innings because of the 10-run rule.

“They’re definitely a good team; they put the ball in play,” Rams coach Dusty Nusser said of the Bobcats (7-6). “The wind picked up and it affected some fly balls.”

In the opener, Portales (6-9) pulled to 4-3 with a three-run fifth that included RBI singles by Omar Legarda and Grant Wagner. The Bobcats, though, came back with two in the bottom half and another one in the sixth.

Right-hander Jacob Defeinbaugh allowed just three hits to get the win, striking out five.

Bloomfield, the home team in the opener and the visiting team in the nightcap, broke a 3-3 tie with a six-run second. Pitcher Elisha Journey drove in four runs with a bases-loaded triple and a bases-loaded walk for the Bobcats, while Tyler Barker went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBIs.

Catcher Matt Martinez hit a two-run triple for the Rams, who were outhit just 10-9 but committed six errors. Legarda finished the game 3-for-3, including a triple, and drove in three runs.

The Rams begin District 4-3A play with a 4:30 p.m. doubleheader on Tuesday at Lovington. From Thursday through Saturday, Nusser said the team will host a baseball camp at Ram Field for grades 2-7.

Registration is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, with the camp to run from 5-7 p.m. the first two days and from 8-10 a.m. on Saturday.
