NMMI deals PHS pair of setbacks

ROSWELL — Roswell hasn’t been a very friendly place to the Portales Ram baseball team so far this season.

After a 10-8, 5-4 sweep by New Mexico Military, Portales (6-5) dropped to 0-4 on the road. Class 4A Roswell Hifh swept Portales last Tuesday.

“Things didn’t really bounce our way,” Portales coach Dusty Nusser said. “There were definitely some plays we needed to make, and we didn’t make them.”

PHS never led in either game, but rallied late to keep each game close.

Second baseman Draven Saiz went 3-for-4 in the opener for the Rams.

Nusser said he rested sophomore Grant Wagner on the mound after a 111-pitch performance on Saturday. At the plate, Wagner went 2-for-4 with a double, a triple and two runs batted in.

Daniel Sanchez pitched a complete game in the night cap. He gave up seven hits and five runs, with just one coming across earned.

Portales goes back on the road this weekend, with a 4 p.m. Friday single game against Hope Christian and an 11 a.m. Saturday doubleheader against Bloomfield at Cleveland High School in Rio Rancho.
