Fishing report — March 27

This fishing report, provided by Bill Dunn and the Department of Game and Fish, has been generated from the best information available from area officers and anglers. Conditions encountered after the report is compiled may differ, as stream, lake and weather conditions alter fish and angler activities.

Northeast

Charette Lakes: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Cimarron River: Stream flow near Cimarron was 4.1 cfs as of Monday morning. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Clayton Lake: High winds, snow and very light fishing pressure was the story here this past week.

Conchas Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using jig and minnow combinations and crank baits for a mix of walleye and white bass. We had no reports on other species.

Coyote Creek: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Eagle Rock Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Eagle Nest Lake: Fishing for trout was good using Power Bait and salmon eggs for rainbow trout. Fishing was fair using spoons and crank baits for northern pike. Fishing was slow to fair using worms for perch. We had no reports on other species. The lake is now open to boating and bank fishing. Lake Alice: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Lake Maloya: Trout fishing was rated as good to excellent for anglers using yellow Power Bait, Pistol Petes, spoons and corn.

Los Pinos: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Manzano Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Maxwell Lake 13: Trout fishing was fair using Power Bait and worms.

Monastery Lake: Trout fishing was very good using spinners, Power Bait, salmon eggs, worms and Pistol Petes.

Morphy Lake: Opens for the season on April 1.

Pecos River: Water flow near the town of Pecos on Monday was 38 cfs. The Mora and Jamie Koch fishing and recreation areas have reopened. The Bert Clancy and Terrero campgrounds remain closed. Trout fishing was good using prince nymphs, spinners, worms, salmon eggs and Power Bait.

Red River: Water flow near the hatchery on Monday was 35 cfs. Trout fishing was good using egg patterns, wooly buggers, San Juan worms, salmon eggs and worms.

Rio Grande: Water flow near the Taos Junction Bridge on Monday was 610 cfs. Trout fishing was fair using parachute adams, streamers, Panther Martins and night crawlers.

Rio Hondo: Stream flow near Valdez on Monday was 10 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Rio Mora: Stream flow near Terrero on Monday was 6.2 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Rio Pueblo: Stream flow near Penasco on Monday was 10 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Santa Barbara: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Shuree Ponds: Closed for the season.

Springer Lake: We had no reports from anglers.

Storrie Lake: Trout fishing was very good using salmon peach Power Bait. We had no reports on other species.

Ute Lake: Fishing was fair to good using jig and minnow combinations at 25 feet for walleye. Fishing was fair trolling crank baits at 15-feet for white bass. Fishing was good using stink bait for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Northwest

Abiquiu Lake: Fishing was generally slow but there were a few smallmouth bass and trout caught by anglers using jigs, streamers and crank baits.

Animas River: Water flow near Aztec on Monday morning was 317 cfs. Trout fishing was fair to good using wooly buggers, egg patterns, salmon eggs and worms.

Albuquerque Area Drains: We had no reports from the drains this week.

Bluewater Lake: Fishing for tiger musky was very slow during the past week but picked up on Sunday. Best baits were spinner baits, swim baits and shrimp. Fishing for all other species was slow. The lake level has dropped a bit but there is still plenty of water for launching boats. Anglers should be aware that it is illegal to use bait fish at this lake.

Brazos River: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Canjilon Lakes: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Chama River: Monday morning water flows below El Vado and Abiquiu were 46 cfs and 82 cfs respectively. Trout fishing below Abiquiu was fair using worms. Corey Miller of Los Alamos caught and released two nice browns and a rainbow. He was using worms. We had no reports from below El Vado.

Cochiti Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

El Vado Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week. The main area of the state park has closed until March 31 but there is still fishing access and open water near the dam.

Fenton Lake: Trout fishing was fair to good for anglers using worms, Power Bait and salmon eggs. Fishing pressure was heavy throughout the week.

Heron Lake: Fishing was fair to good using jigs with cut bait for lake trout. The lakers were found in 20 to 30 feet of water. Four-wheel-drive was recommended for launching at the primitive ramp. Trout fishing from the bank was rated as slow to fair by anglers using Power Bait.

Jackson Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Jemez Waters: The Jemez River was flowing at 28 cfs on Monday. Trout fishing on the Jemez was good using copper John Barrs., egg patterns and salmon eggs. We had no reports from the other Jemez streams. The Valles Caldera has been closed to fishing for the winter but should be back up and running soon.

Laguna del Campo: Closed for the season.

Lake Farmington: Trout fishing was good using Power Bait, small spoons, Pistol Petes and salmon eggs. We had no reports on other species.

Navajo Lake: Fishing for northern pike was slow to fair using jerk baits, swim baits and crank baits. Fishing for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass was slow with just a few caught by anglers using jerk baits and crank baits. We had no reports on other species.

San Gregorio: We had no reports from anglers this week.

San Juan River: Water flow below Navajo Dam on Monday was 251 cfs. Trout fishing through the Quality Waters was good using red, pink or orange midge larva, egg patterns, disco midges, princess nymphs, leeches, streamers and San Juan worms. There are good midge and BWO hatches coming off in the afternoon hours. Anglers having the best luck were adding a little flash to their flies. Fishing through the bait waters was good using worms, Gulp eggs, salmon eggs and jerk baits.

Santa Cruz Lake: Trout fishing was very good for anglers using Pistol Petes, wooly buggers, Fisher Chick spinners, Panther Martins, small crank baits, Power bait, salmon eggs and worms.

Seven Springs Brood Pond: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Tingley Beach: Fishing at the Youth and Central Ponds was very good using Power Bait, worms, salmon eggs, homemade dough bait, small spoons and Pistol Petes. Fishing at the Catch and Release Pond was fair to good using small streamers and egg patterns for trout and an occasional largemouth bass.

Southwest

Bear Canyon: Trout fishing was good using salmon eggs, worms, Power Bait, wooly buggers and Pistol Petes.

Bill Evans Lake: Trout fishing continued to be very good as anglers did well using Power Bait, Pistol Petes, wooly buggers, worms and salmon eggs. We had no reports on other species.

Caballo Lake: Fishing was good using Wally Divers, Rapalas, white and chartreuse Bombers, Flicker Shad, jig and minnow combinations and curly tail grubs for a mixed bag of white bass and walleye. Fishing was good using stink bait and night crawlers for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Elephant Butte Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using crank baits, jerk baits and grubs for white bass and an occasional striped bass. There were a few largemouth bass caught by anglers using crank baits and tubes. Fishing for catfish was fair using cut bait, live shad and night crawlers. We had no reports on other species. The surface water temp ranged from the high 40s to the low 50s. The Marina Del Sur, Rock Canyon and Dam Site marinas are open.

Escondida Lake: Trout fishing was good using Power Bait, homemade dough bait, worms, Gulp eggs and spinners.

Gila River: Water flow on the Gila as of this past Monday was 90 cfs. We had no reports from anglers.

Glenwood Pond: Trout fishing was good using Power Bait.

Lake Roberts: A construction project to improve the dam has begun and extremely low lake levels make it increasingly difficult to fish. The project is expected to continue into next summer. The lake is still open to bank fishing but difficult to access.

Percha Dam: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Quemado Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using worms and Power Bait for trout. Fishing for tiger musky was slow but there was one big fish caught by an angler using Power Bait.

Rio Grande: Water flow below Elephant Butte on Monday was .7 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Snow Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Young Pond: Trout fishing was fair using Power Bait, corn, salmon eggs and Pistol Petes. Fishing for crappie was slow to fair using Pistol Petes. We had no reports on other species.

Southeast

Bataan Lake: Trout fishing was good using small spoons, Pistol Petes, worms and salmon eggs. We had no reports on other species.

Black River: Stream flow at Malaga on Monday was .86 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Blue Hole Park Pond: Trout fishing was fair using Power Bait.

Bonito Lake: Closed.

Bosque Redondo: Trout fishing was fair to good using Power Bait, Panther Martin spinners, salmon eggs and spinners. We had no reports on other species.

Bottomless Lakes: Trout fishing at the Devil’s Inkwell and at Pasture Lake was fair for anglers using Power Bait.

Brantley Lake: Anglers are to practice catch-and-release for all fish here as high levels of DDT were found in several fish. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Carlsbad Municipal Lake: The water level has been lowered for shoreline and dock work. The winter trout stocking has been diverted to Bataan Lake.

Chaparral Park Lake: Trout fishing was fair to good using homemade dough bait, Power Bait and small Kastmasters.

El Rito Creek: Trout fishing was very good using worms and Power Bait.

Eunice Lake: Trout fishing was good using Power Bait, homemade dough bait and salmon eggs.

Green Meadow Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Greene Acres Lake: Trout fishing was good using Power Bait, homemade dough bait and salmon eggs.

Grindstone Reservoir: Trout fishing was very good using worms, Power Bait, small spoons and Pistol Petes.

Jal Lake: Trout fishing was fair to good using Pistol Petes, salmon eggs and Power Bait.

Lake Van: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Oasis Park Lake: Trout fishing was very good this past week as several limits were caught by anglers using worms, salmon eggs, homemade dough bait, Pistol Petes, wooly buggers and Power Bait.

Pecos River: Stream flow below Sumner Lake on Monday was 83 cfs. Fishing was fair using Power Bait and worms for trout. We had no reports on other species.

Perch Lake: Trout fishing was fair to good using Power Bait, homemade dough bait, worms, spinners and Pistol Petes.

Ruidoso River: Stream flow at Hollywood on Monday was 13 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Santa Rosa Lake: Fishing was slow for all species.

Sumner Lake: As of this past Sunday the surface water temp was in the low 50s. Fishing was slow for all species.
